This paper will examine Sophocles’ Antigone (441-442 f.Kr) through Søren Kierkegaard’s thesis on tragedy, “The Ancient Tragical Motif as Reflected in the Modern”. It argues that Antigone as a double tragedy portrays both sorrow and pain and their corresponding concepts of human agency. Antigone exhibits two opposing yet interdependent configurations of substantiality while stressing the limitations of human agency in relation to the divine order of the gods. Imply-
