PROJECT ACTIVITIES IN THE 2021 SEASON

Galore Creek is located in Tahltan Territory, approximately 85 km southwest of Telegraph Creek. The Galore Creek deposit was discovered in 1955. Teck’s interest in the project dates back to the early 1960’s. In May 2007, Teck formed a 50:50 partnership with NovaGold. In July 2018, Newmont acquired NovaGold’s 50% interest in the project, forming a new Galore Creek Partnership between Teck and Newmont.

In 2021, Galore Creek initiated a new Prefeasibility Study, to be completed by mid-2023. The field program at Galore Creek consisted of an 8,000 metre drill program, geological and geotechnical investigations, environmental baseline study, and maintenance of equipment, facilities and infrastructure. The main field program operated between June and early October, with environmental baseline work continuing year-round.

Galore Creek continued its investment in an education bursary program established in 2006 that supports Tahltans to pursue further education in diverse areas of study and interest. The GCMC-Tahltan Bursary Program celebrated its 16-year anniversary in 2021 and has now awarded 163 individual bursaries to Tahltan pursuing trade school, college and universitylevel study. In 2021, the Ann M Ball Bursary was introduced which intends to support emerging and existing female Tahltan leaders who have made a positive impact in their community. The 2021 recipient of the Ann M Ball Bursary was Teneal Nole.

Any successes or challenges you’d like to share? We had a successful and safe field program in 2021 with no safety incidents or COVID-19 cases on site. We held several technical working sessions between the Tahltan Central Government (TCG), Tahltan Heritage Resources Environmental Assessment Team (THREAT), Tahltan representatives and members of the project team. In these sessions, a broad cross-section of valuable experiences and perspectives were shared which have been incorporated into improving how the project team conducts field work and data collection right through to ensuring closure planning is developed during the development phase of the project.

During our main field program, between 60–80 employees worked at two active camps at the Galore Creek site.
