Both Red Chris and GJ are located 80km south of Dease Lake.

COMPANY OVERVIEW & UPDATE

Any successes or challenges you’d like to share?

Newcrest congratulates the Tahltan Emergency Management Committee on their recent recognition and award from the Association for Mineral Exploration (AME) for their leadership role in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in communities, and for their collaboration with industry to safeguard the health and safety of everyone living and working in Tahltan Territory.

Newcrest have commenced the rollout of its Respect @Work program; an initiative targeted to change the image of the industry and eliminate sexual harassment and discrimination at its operations around the world.

In March 2021, Newcrest announced the new discovery of East Ridge at Red Chris, which has the potential to expand the current mineral resource. Later in the year, the first blast was made to commence the underground exploration decline, now officially named the Naghā Decline (after the Tahltan word for “wolverine”).

Through the Newcrest COVID-19 Community Support Fund, our Community Relations team has committed over $800,000 to initiatives and projects in Tahltan Territory. The team is currently undertaking a Social Baseline Study in collaboration with the Tahltan Nation.

Number of employees working on your project(s)?

NRCM employed over 700 employees in 2021, across operations, exploration, and the block cave project team.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES IN THE 2021 SEASON

Open pit operations at Red Chris continued through 2021, while planning advanced on a proposed underground block cave expansion (including publication of the Red Chris Block Cave Pre-Feasibility study in October 2021). The associated exploration decline has advanced 765 metres as of January 2022. To date, 98,522 metres of exploration drilling has been completed, and 128 soil samples collected. Drilling has been undertaken in support of the proposed underground expansion. Select historic drill core was transported to the Red Chris Core Processing Area and reclamation activities around the existing camp were completed.

Where does the majority of your financing come from year to year? What’s the breakdown of who owns your company and the company market cap?

Newcrest finances all activities at site. More info can be found on our corporate website. NRCM is jointly owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd (70%) and Imperial Metals (30%), it is not a publicly traded JV; its majority shareholder, Newcrest Mining Ltd, has a market capitalization of approximately A$18.5 billion.

Has your company purchased or sold any other properties in Tahltan Territory during the last year?

In November 2021, Newcrest announced that its intentions to acquire Pretium Resources, the owner of the Brucejack Mine. The transaction is still being finalized at the time of writing.

Tentative plans and hopes for the 2022 season?

At Red Chris, 2022 will see our teams actively working on defining the Feasibility Study for the block cave expansion and advancing efforts to establish a permanent office within the territory. Our exploration team will continue drilling and expanding the surface exploration program at Red Chris, while continuing preparations for an initial drill program at GJ.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TCG & TAHLTAN NATION

During the 2021 season, what involvement did TCG personnel and departments have with your company? If they were not involved, why not?

The Environmental Oversight Committee and technical sub-committee, led by TCG Lands Director Nalaine Morin, remain integral to our planning. The site has worked closely with the Emergency Management Committee, led by Feddie Louie, to track and mitigate COVID-19 cases and provide support on health-related emergencies and capacity challenges. The Guardian and Wildlife Department are regularly engaged to support the Wildlife Monitoring Program at Red Chris, and the Land Department continues to support permitting for surface disturbance required for exploration activities.

In 2021, how many Tahltans did you employ? What positions did they hold in your company and what percentage of Tahltans did you employ compared to others?

As of January 2022, Red Chris employs 150 Tahltan and Tahltan Associates, accounting for around 20% of our workforce. Their roles span various levels and skill sets, including four Tahltan employees in leadership positions. Other critical roles held by Tahltan employees include: Mill Maintenance Planner, Community Investment Coordinator, Supervisor, Tailings Dam Construction, Geologist, Operational Technologies Specialist and Tahltan Human Resources Officer.

What employment opportunities, now and in the future, are available to Tahltan members?

We strongly believe in growing our workforce with us. As Newcrest refines its plans to expand Red Chris operations underground, a transition of essential and transferable skills will be required. We continue to consult with the TCG to refine plans for training and upskilling Tahltan members today, in anticipation of our workforce needs in the future. Entry-level roles are currently available for Exploration Field Assistants, while new positions for Exploration Coordinators will be established in 2022.

In addition to traditional mining-focused positions, NRCM hires across a range of fields including environmental management, exploration, human resources, and community relations. Did you have any Tahltan contractors working for your company?

Yes. The average percentage of spend for Tahltan affiliated companies for 2021 was 25% with some months being more than 30% of the total contract spend.

Do you have any outside contractors working for you? If so, who are they? Who were the primary contractors you utilized? Do they offer employment opportunities to Tahltan members?

We currently work with the TNDC construction and site support services, along with Sodexo to provide in-camp services at the mine site. Equity Exploration Consultants Ltd. from Vancouver has been hired to help deliver our surface exploration program, as well as Boart Longyear and Hy-Tech drilling. In addition, Barminco are contracted to execute the underground exploration decline.

These instances are consistent with the terms of the Impact Benefit Agreement (IBA) and they typically fall under the preferred bid or operation critical provisions with the IBA and in many cases are in areas of work or material/equipment supply where the Tahltan do not have specific contractors or businesses/capability to perform the work or do not have direct sources of supply. These areas of work or supply are reviewed with the TCG Contracts Manager weekly and formally processed through our New Contract Requirement (NCR) system.

All of our contractors offer opportunities for local and Tahltan employment. We actively encourage contractors to engage local workforces and maintain this as a contractual requirement for our partners. In these cases, where Newcrest utilizes outside contractors, there is a standard clause within our documents that specifically requests contractors to work with our Tahltan partners in the spirit of the IBA and put forward a Tahltan Participation Plan (in relation to jobs/careers) with their proposal for the work for our review and evaluation prior to the award of the work.
