Newmont Corp
Has your company purchased or sold any other properties in Tahltan Territory during the last year?
In 2021, Newmont purchased GT Gold and with it the Saddle Project and associated claims.
Tentative plans and hopes for the 2022 season?
Following Newmont’s meeting with the Tahltan Nation at RoundUp in January 2022, the Tahltan Nation asked Newmont to refrain from conducting exploration activities at the Saddle Project in 2022 to allow the Nation time to advance the objectives of the TSI. In response to this request, Newmont has committed to not undertake drilling at the Saddle Project in 2022. Instead, with the Nation’s consent, we have respectfully requested to implement low-impact activities such as continuing our environmental and archaeological studies with TEEM and completing a Tahltan Land Use and Occupancy Study of the project area with the THREAT. It is our hope that through these activities can help to support the implementation of the Tahltan Stewardship Inititative (TSI).
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TCG & TAHLTAN NATION
During the 2021 season, what involvement did TCG personnel and departments have with your company? If they were not involved, why not?
Newmont had numerous engagements with the TCG in 2021. Prior to and immediately following our acquisition of GT Gold Newmont engaged with TCG Leadership to discuss the sensitivities around the Saddle Project. We discussed procurement and employment opportunities at the site and learned more about Tahltan businesses and OnTrack with the Employment & Contracting Director. We also met with the Education & Training Director to discuss future opportunities on the Saddle Project.
The TCG Communications & External Relations Director was helpful in supporting Newmont to send out our Fall 2021 Newsletter on our activities in Tahltan Territory, as well as other communications with the Nation. Finally, in November we had a meeting with the Lands Director, the Fisheries Director, other members of THREAT and the TCG Lands, Fisheries, and Wildlife Departments to discuss the Saddle Project and the environmental studies underway.
In 2021, how many Tahltans did you employ? What positions did they hold in your company and what percentage of Tahltans did you employ compared to others?
In 2021, given the limited activities, the project had very few full -time employees. We did not have any Tahltan employees in 2021 but we contracted TEEM, Tahltan-Allnorth, Bandstra and Keda Propane. We engaged in discussions with other Tahltan businesses and employees.
What employment opportunities, now and in the future, are available to Tahltan members?
In 2022, Newmont will hire a Tahltan Community Liaison Officer. We also hope to have other opportunities available to Tahltan members on site to support our environmental and archaeological studies in the 2022 field season.
Why should Tahltan members want to work for you?
Newmont is the world’s leading gold company with a world-class portfolio of assets in North America, South America, Australia and Africa. We are the only gold producer listed in the S&P 500 Index and are widely recognized for our principled environmental, social and governance practices. Our five core values of safety, integrity, sustainability, inclusion and responsibility are the cornerstone of what we believe and what we do. We hope that the Tahltan community feels that we have been living up to these values with our activities in Tahltan Territory, and that our commitment to them differentiates us a company Tahltans want to work for.
With respect to COVID-19, Newmont will have strict safety protocols in place to protect our workers and the Tahltan community. This includes a vaccination requirement for all employees and contractors, rigorous testing protocols, and strict COVID-19 management plan at site.
Did you have any Tahltan contractors working for your company? What percentage of your contracting dollars went to Tahltan companies, including TNDC and their joint ventures?
Yes, In 2021, Newmont hired TEEM to conduct environmental studies. We also started work with Tahltan-Allnorth Consultants on upgrades to the Bear Paw Camp, used Bandstra for all of our shipping needs and Keda Propane supplied propane to our camp. Around 35% of Newmont’s contracting dollars for the 2021 field season went to Tahltan owned or affiliated companies.
Do you have any outside contractors working for you? If so, who are they? Who were the primary contractors you utilized? Do they offer employment opportunities to Tahltan members?
In our contract with TEEM, there is a commitment to have a Tahltan field assistant supporting our work when possible. In 2021, TEEM subcontracted to Northern Labour Services, who provided field assistants from Iskut and Dease Lake to support our environmental fieldwork. All of Newmont’s contractors for the 2022 season will be encouraged to offer opportunities to Tahltan members.
Anything else you would like to share with the Tahltan Nation?
As Newmont continues to strengthen our position in Tahltan Territory, we do so with a deep appreciation for the relationship we have begun to develop with the Tahltan communities, the Band Councils and the TCG. We are committed to building the relationship and working toward creative solutions for the Saddle Project.
