What is your relationship with TNDC and the Tahltan Nation? How long have you had your joint venture (or other relationship) with TNDC?

Sodexo is committed to developing, nurturing, and increasing business relationships with the Tahltan Nation. This commitment is founded on four pillars:

• Indigenous Leadership; • Indigenous Employment; • Indigenous Communities; and, • Indigenous Owned Suppliers.

Sodexo follows the four R’s: Respect, Recognition, Revenue Sharing, Representation. Since 2002.

What employment and training opportunities are available to Tahltan members? How do you communicate these opportunities?

Employment: Sodexo is committed to hiring locally, first and foremost, ensuring that Tahltan members have priority access to employment.

Training: Sodexo has a robust training program which includes apprenticeships (culinary, trades), development of frontline supervisory training program mentorship. Opportunities are communicated through our on-site leadership, internal website, and information board.

Why should Tahltan members want to work for you?

Sodexo believes in prosperity and quality of life for everybody, and it is an important part of doing business in Canada on Indigenous land. We have spent years learning how to work with impacted communities in ways that focus not just on its day-today business, but also on what impact the company’s actions will have tomorrow, and on the future of Indigenous prosperity. Together, we strengthen and enhance a prosperous Indigenous economy through the fostering of business relationships throughout our energy and resources accounts.

As a company, we are committed to providing a positive ‘legacy’ footprint in the communities where we operate. Through our training and development programs, our partnership commitments, and sustainable practices, we can help to elevate local communities. Sodexo Canada values the diversity and talent of all our employees. We are fully committed to providing a work environment that offers equal employment opportunities and growth potential to each employee. Diversity is a business imperative and an ethical and social responsibility, grounded in our core values.

In our continuing effort to attain an inclusive organization, we are committed to embracing, leveraging, and respecting the diversity of our workforce, our clientele, and the communities in which we live, work, and serve. This commitment is creating a workplace that is barrier-free for people with disabilities, people of all faiths, sexual orientations, gender identities and backgrounds. In addition, Sodexo offers solutions to improve employee quality of life and recognize their efforts. These include incentive and recognition programs, professional development tools and more.

What philanthropic contributions have you made to the Tahltan Nation?

Sodexo has provided compassionate support during times of need and emergencies. In 2009, working with the TNDC, Sodexo provided bedding for those in need. In 2011 Sodexo provided breakfasts and snacks for the Dease Lake and Iskut schools, and during the fire at Telegraph Creek we provided food relief without delay.

How do you communicate contracting processes when you are looking for services providers?

Sodexo do not subcontract services. Sodexo Canada believes the economic development of Indigenous communities, as well as the financial independence of Indigenous people is the responsibility of all Canadians and Canadian corporations. Our partnership with TNDC has allowed us to realize our policies and commitments.

What is your approach to including Tahltan businesses in your operations?

Since 2002, Sodexo has worked collaboratively with SRS, one of TNDC’s longest and most successful commercial partnerships. In 2007, SRS became the largest regional employer with over 200 staff.
