COMPANY OVERVIEW

Tahltan Forestry Ltd. (TFL) is a company jointly-owned by TNDC and NorthPac Forestry Group Ltd. TFL was founded in late 2019, with the purpose of managing all forestry activities in Tahltan Territory. In addition to a head office in Vancouver, NorthPac’s base of operations is in Terrace. TFL manages the Tahltan forest licence that has an allowable annual cut of 75,000 m3. This license covers the entirety of the non-overlapping portion of Tahltan Territory within the Cassiar Timber Supply Area. In addition to harvesting the Tahltan licence, TFL performs tree clearing and access work for projects in Tahltan Territory, such as for mines, powerlines and other infrastructure.

What is your relationship with TNDC and the Tahltan Nation? How long have you had your joint venture (or other relationship) with TNDC?

Tahltan Forestry Ltd. is jointly owned by TNDC and NorthPac Forestry Group Ltd. The company was formed in late 2019.

What employment and training opportunities are available to Tahltan members? How do you communicate these opportunities?

Employment opportunities are available in logging and related support positions, such as project coordination, supervision and safety management. Tahltan Forestry has not yet developed a forestry training program but this is something we are working on. Opportunities are communicated through OnTrack, and through coordinating with the TCG Employment & Contracting Director.

Why should Tahltan members want to work for you?

Tahltan members should want to work for us because it provides an opportunity to participate in forestry within Tahltan Territory. Forestry provides opportunities for work both in the field and/or in the office. There is something for everyone.

What training opportunities do you provide for Tahltan members?

A training program is still being developed.

What philanthropic contributions have you made to the Tahltan Nation?

NorthPac has previously supported HATs, hockey teams and provided education scholarships.

Do you have any Tahltan contractors working for your company? If yes, who?

Yes, Wild Timber Industries Ltd.; and, Northern Labour Services Ltd.

How do you communicate contracting processes when you are looking for services providers?

Contracting opportunities are communicated to Ann Ball, TCG Employment & Contracting Director and/or directly to the Tahltan businesses (e.g., Wild Timber).

What is your approach to including Tahltan businesses in your operations?

Utilizing Tahltan businesses is a top priority for Tahltan Forestry Ltd. Logging operations on the forest licence will be starting in 2022 and we look forward working to develop additional logging capacity within the Tahltan Nation.

Anything else you would like to share with the Tahltan Nation?

Tahltan Forestry Ltd. just completed a successful project for Skeena Resources, clearing 91.3 ha. Tahltan Forestry Ltd. was awarded a contract to clear trees at the Dease Lake Airport, and will be subcontracting work to Wild Timber Industries, a Tahltan-member owned business. We have submitted our first Cutting Permit for approval and we expect logging operations on the forest licence to start within the next two months.
