Tahltech Drilling Services Ltd
TNDC PARTNER
TAHLTECH DRILLING SERVICES LTD.
COMPANY OVERVIEW
Tahltech Drilling Services Ltd., (Tahltech) is a limited partnership between the TNDC and Geotech Drilling Services Ltd. (Geotech). The partnership operates in the Tahltan Nation providing multi-disciplinary drilling services for various drilling markets including mineral exploration diamond drilling, and geotechnical and environmental drilling. Methods include sonic, air rotary, mud rotary and auger drilling, cone penetration testing (CPT) for tailings facilities and geotechnical assessments through Gregg Drilling and Testing Canada (Gregg), which is majority owned by Geotech.
Tahltech can utilize various types of drills that are mounted on a variety drill carrier to drill in almost any location including: track, truck, skid, heliportable, underground, barge and amphibious drill carriers. Exploration services focus on defining suspected or known deposits of precious/base metals, coal and/or other valuable minerals in the subsurface at depths up to and over 1,200 metres. The geotechnical and other services typically focused on determining the subsurface characteristics for infrastructure design, typically for mine development in the Tahltan Territory. These services are also required for most types of development, remediation, or construction projects. Often geotechnical drilling involves instrumentation installation or other installations such as groundwater monitoring wells. Typical potential projects include mining exploration, pipeline alignments, mine reclamation, mine pit infrastructure design, tailing facility feasibility/upgrades, hydro-electric dam feasibility/upgrades, road network evaluation, energy facilities, and foundation design. Outside of the Tahltan Territory geotechnical works on projects across Canada, has worked internationally (Africa, South America, USA, Greenland) and has recently completed a geotechnical project at a research facility in Antarctica for the Australian Government.

What is your relationship with TNDC and the Tahltan Nation? How long have you had your joint venture (or other relationship) with TNDC?
A formal relationship was established with TNDC via a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Revenue Share Agreement in March 2016. In October 2016 TNDC and geotechnical incorporated Tahltech Drilling Services Ltd. and is a limited partnership 51% owned by TNDC.
What employment and training opportunities are available to Tahltan members? How do you communicate these opportunities?
Typically, employment and training opportunities are for drillers and driller assistants; however, depending on the projects there may be opportunities and other positions (i.e., administration, safety, driver, etc.). For opportunities on projects within the Tahltan Territory we communicate with TNDC and Tahltan Works. Positions available are now also posted on “OnTrack” on the TCG web page. We also encourage people interested in working outside of the territory to apply on Geotech’s website: geotechdrilling.com.
Why should Tahltan members want to work for you?
We offer on-the-job training, as we grow a more stable client base, we can introduce potential employees to different drilling techniques, and we are a TNDC partner. Positions at Tahltech offer the ability to work within the territory and opportunity to travel outside of the territory if opportunities present, yet still live local. Tahltech has a strong focus on organic growth, room to move up the ranks.
Our diverse service offerings allow employees to learn new skills with every industry sector (i.e., exploration, geotechnical, environmental), many of these skills can be used outside of the workplace. Further to this, we pay the market wages, with bonus packages and a great benefit package with RRSP matching.
What training opportunities do you provide for Tahltan members?
Most training is provided on-the-job on how to safely work around and operate our various drilling equipment. Other training could be provided based on the position available, this includes:
• Base online training courses: Company Safety Orientation, Bear Awareness, Firefighting & Fire
Extinguisher Training, Hazard Assessment,
WHMIS and Winter Driving;
• Depending on job description additional training may include: Ground Disturbance 201, Standard
First Aid, H2S Alive, Construction Safety Training
System, and Common Safety Orientation.
What philanthropic contributions have you made to the Tahltan Nation?
In the past years, Geotech has donated gifts and/ or items to the Community Christmas Party, Job Fair prizes, and various other community events. In 2021 we were a Gold sponsor for the Healthy Active Tahltans program. As a TNDC partner we understand that a portion of the funds raised through the Tahltech partnership would also help support TNDC with its philanthropic contributions to the community.
How do you communicate contracting processes when you are looking for services providers?
If we are informed of services needed that we do not provide, we contact TNDC to see if they have other partners who can provide those services.
What is your approach to including Tahltan businesses in your operations?
We work with the TNDC when we recognize any opportunities for services we do not provide. Most of the time the end client hires all the subcontractors though.
Anything else you would like to share with the Tahltan Nation?
We value the relationship we have with the TNDC and Tahltan Nation and look to create more benefit to the community as projects are built.
