PROPERTY LOCATION & ACQUISITION DATE
Galore Creek is located in Tahltan Territory, approximately 85 km southwest of Telegraph Creek. The Galore Creek deposit was discovered in 1955. Teck’s interest in the project dates back to the early 1960’s. In May 2007, Teck formed a 50:50 partnership with NovaGold. In July 2018, Newmont acquired NovaGold’s 50% interest in the project, forming a new Galore Creek Partnership between Teck and Newmont.
COMPANY OVERVIEW & UPDATE
Any successes or challenges you’d like to share?
We had a successful and safe field program in 2021 with no safety incidents or COVID-19 cases on site. We held several technical working sessions between the Tahltan Central Government (TCG), Tahltan Heritage Resources Environmental Assessment Team (THREAT), Tahltan representatives and members of the project team. In these sessions, a broad cross-section of valuable experiences and perspectives were shared which have been incorporated into improving how the project team conducts field work and data collection right through to ensuring closure planning is developed during the development phase of the project. Galore Creek continued its investment in an education bursary program established in 2006 that supports Tahltans to pursue further education in diverse areas of study and interest. The GCMC-Tahltan Bursary Program celebrated its 16-year anniversary in 2021 and has now awarded 163 individual bursaries to Tahltan pursuing trade school, college and universitylevel study. In 2021, the Ann M Ball Bursary was introduced which intends to support emerging and existing female Tahltan leaders who have made a positive impact in their community. The 2021 recipient of the Ann M Ball Bursary was Teneal Nole.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES IN THE 2021 SEASON
In 2021, Galore Creek initiated a new Prefeasibility Study, to be completed by mid-2023. The field program at Galore Creek consisted of an 8,000 metre drill program, geological and geotechnical investigations, environmental baseline study, and maintenance of equipment, facilities and infrastructure. The main field program operated between June and early October, with environmental baseline work continuing year-round.
Galore Creek reopened the Smithers office in the summer of 2021. We are excited for the opportunity for increased community engagement, particular with Tahltans that reside in the Smithers and BulkleyNechako Regions of BC in the coming year.
Number of employees working on your project(s)?
During our main field program, between 60–80 employees worked at two active camps at the Galore Creek site.
Where does the majority of your financing come from year to year? What’s the breakdown of who owns your company?
GCMC is funded by Teck and Newmont through the Galore Creek Partnership. Teck is Canada’s largest diversified mining company. Newmont is based in Denver Colorado, and is the world’s largest gold mining company. The project is held in a 50:50 partnership between Newmont and Teck. The Galore Creek Project is operated by Galore Creek Mining Corporation (GCMC).
Tentative plans and hopes for the 2022 season?
Details of the 2022 field program are being developed and include general site maintenance, continuing environmental baseline work and engineering studies. The summer program will primarily be operated out of the Uhtłān camp in the Galore Valley, with the Ch’iyōne camp in use seasonally and as a staging area. The main field program will be conducted over a 4-month period during the summer, and environmental baseline activities will be ongoing throughout the year. Environmental baseline studies will be ongoing this winter, utilizing the Sus camp at km 3 of the Galore Creek Access Road.
The Prefeasibility Study is being conducted over a 24–30-month period and commenced in January 2021. The team will continue to seek Tahltan review and involvement during the Prefeasibility Study through continued technical working sessions, with particular interest in gaining Tahltan input into the Environmental Assessment/Regulatory Process, Tailings Management Facility review and assessment, and options and design for closure discussions.
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TCG & TAHLTAN NATION
During the 2021 season, what involvement did TCG personnel and departments have with your company? If they were not involved, why not?
Galore Creek engaged the Tahltan Nation through a number of meetings and sessions. We had five technical working sessions with representatives from the TCG including the Lands Department, Fisheries Department, representatives from the Wildlife Department and THREAT. Our team also worked with the Director of Employment & Contracting related to activities on the Galore site, the Director of Culture & Heritage on further developing GCMC’s cultural awareness program, and the Director of Education & Training on the 2021 Bursary Program implementation and administration.
In 2021, how many Tahltans did you employ? What positions did they hold in your company and what percentage of Tahltans did you employ compared to others?
A total of 57 Tahltan workers hired for the summer program working as mechanics, mechanics helper, cooks and kitchen staff, site and operations maintenance crews, general and environmental labour, core cutters, fallers, archaeological assistants, and environmental scientists. Senior roles on the site project team held by Tahltans included Camp Lead, Site Operations Advisor, Site Environment Assistant, and Camp Maintenance Hand. The summer program had a total of 9,445 person days on site with a total of 2,611 Tahltan person days worked. In total, Tahltan people worked 28% of all days worked during the 2021 program.
What employment opportunities, now and in the future, are available to Tahltan members?
As the project continues through its development study phases and into construction and operation, full and part-time employment opportunities will be available directly through Galore Creek and potentially with our service providers. Galore Creek is interested to hire and develop talented Tahltans interested in sustainable and responsible mineral resource development in general management, project development, operations, technical, environmental, and sustainability focused roles.
Why should Tahltan members want to work for you?
Galore Creek is a world-class mineral resource development opportunity that has the potential to become a flagship mining project and operation in Canada for decades that will be developed with direct input from Tahltan. Since the deposit was discovered, Tahltans have played an important role in the advancement of the Galore Creek Project, and we expect that to continue through development and into operation. The project has a long collaborative history with the Tahltan Nation, and Galore Creek is proud that a number of Tahltan members have returned to work at the project for many years. Galore Creek is committed to the responsible and sustainable development of the resource for the overall benefit of Tahltan communities.
Galore Creek is seeking opportunities to continue to develop, train and grow the Tahltan workforce and works collaboratively with TCG to ensure opportunities are available to Tahltan members.
