Annual: Trinity 2018

VOLLEYBALL At the end of 2017, Trinity College entered the WA State Schools Cup, fielding six teams: Year 7A, Year 8A, 9 Honours, Year 10B and Open Honours divisions. There was some very competitive play during this tournament. The 9A team won a close match against Rossmoyne Senior High School to win the gold medal in five sets 3-2. In the Open Honours Trinity was the favourite, being the defending champions; however, there was some tough competition in the form of Aquinas College, St Stephen’s College and Rossmoyne Senior High School. The semi-final was a great match against St Stephen’s and there were some intense points. However, Trinity proved too strong in attack and won 3-0. The final showdown against Aquinas was a repeat of the PSA final. Our boys were thirsting for revenge and with a fully healthy team, the determination to win showed on their faces. Trinity pulled away to an early lead; however, Aquinas evened in the second set. The boys dug deep and showing flair in attack and great defensive fortitude – we were victorious and won the State Championships for the second time. This year the Middle School volleyball program yielded great results. Most pleasing is the depth of talent and numbers within each year group. It is commendable to see boys participate in junior league volleyball as well as to be selected for the WA state programs. The Middle School teams won a clear majority of their games and

showed tremendous potential. Special thanks goes Ms Rita Basilio, Ms Katie Rolston, Mr Travis Nederpelt (’03), Mr Peter Fitzgerald (’13), Mr Julian Fritz, Mr Matt Murphy (’14) and Mr Dustin Aylmore for their support and dedication in peparing our teams over the season. Once again, our senior volleyball teams enjoyed an outstanding season with some close matches in the PSA competition. This year, Trinity fielded large squads from 1st to 5th teams with many players having to spend time on the bench because of large numbers. This is an enviable position to be in and showcased our depth against many of the other PSA schools. This year, all senior teams warmed up together as well as having breakfast after the morning trainings. This provided a great atmosphere in the gym and set a positive tone for the session. Thanks to Mr Tim Hince, Mr Trong Nguyen (’16), Mr Joel Shinkfield and Mrs Rosa West for coaching our boys in 10s, 4ths and 5ths respectively. Our 3rd VI team experienced many victories and continued to develop a strong sense of camaraderie under the tutelage of Mr John Ricciardi. The mighty 2nds continued to improve and develop under the tutelage of Mr Craig Adams. Many of these boys will form the basis of a strong 1st squad next year. The depth and talent in these teams are a testament to the strong volleyball culture in Trinity College.
