ITALIAN

It has been another busy year in Italian at Trinity College with many things happening. The languages area continues to grow and develop which should see a growth in numbers over the next few years.

In Term 2, the McGrath family hosted an Italian Assistant through the Western Australian Association of Teachers of Italian (WAATI) for the duration of the term. Sara Pizzelli from Lake Como spent the term at Trinity College, assisting with all year levels. She was from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan and was of great assistance while she was here.

At the end of Term 2, Matteo Francescucci arrived for a two-month exchange from Pescara in the Abruzzo region. He came as part of a joint program between WAATI and AFS-Intercultura and stayed with the Bonwick family. He attended school and experienced life in Western Australia while improving his English. The Italian Department looks forward to hosting more overseas students next year and, hopefully, sending some Trinity students on exchange at the end of the year.

In Term 3, the Years 11 and 12 students sat the WAATI exams. These external exams are written and marked by experienced WACE examiners and give the students the opportunity to sit independently written and marked exams. Several Year 11s performed exceptionally well in these exams.

The highlight of the year for Italian, is the annual Italian Week celebrations in Week 4 of Term 4. This event has continued to grow and there were some fantastic events throughout the week. It kicked off with bocce in Centenary Park on Monday followed by many events, including learning the tarantella in Year 8 Dance, gnocchi making for the Year 6s and a gelato van from Tuesday to Thursday. The biggest event of the week was when Centenary Park became an Italian piazza on the Thursday with food vans, Italian cars and an Italian motorbike. There was pizza, pasta and gelato available and a beautiful display of Italian cars thanks to the Fiat Lancia Club of Western Australia. On the Friday, a multicultural morning tea for the staff was held where staff members brought in food from their own cultural background to share. The final event of the week was an Italian assembly in the Junior School where some Years 4, 5 and 6 students showed off their linguistic skills. It was a fantastic way to finish the week and we look forward to making this event bigger and better next year!

BOOK WEEK 2018 – FIND YOUR TREASURE

The theme for Book Week 2018 was Find Your Treasure and the College Library was buzzing with Book Week activities. In addition to a superb display, the Library worked with the English Department to create a very busy week of quizzes, challenges, activities and events. Some of these included an Instagram treasure hunt, a daily quiz, a guess the teacher competition, a bookmark design Competition, the annual book sale and a book face competition.

INCURSIONS

The College Library was fortunate to have three very popular incursions during lunchtimes. The first was a visit from a career firefighter, Mr Jarrod Luscombe, who spoke to students about his life as a firefighter and how he has progressed in his chosen career. He also brought in items from his uniform that students were able to try on. In Term 3, Ms Cass Rowles from Roaming Reptiles brought in a selection of Western Australian reptiles for the students to look at, listen to and also hold. In Term 4, a group from Circus WA run a circus workshop for interested students. The boys were taught a number of circus tricks, including juggling, spinning plates, hula hoops, rolla bolla and diablo.

BOOK CLUBS

The Trinity College Book Clubs go from strength to strength with regular fortnightly meetings, special events and the annual lunch all happening this year. For the first time, the College has started a Year 7 Book Club which has been very well received with a consistent group of students attending to enjoy the chat, the Milo and the snacks.

BOFFINS BOOK CLUB VISIT

The now annual visit from Amy Hotz from Boffins Books was a great success. Amy brings a carefully chosen selection of new Young Adult fiction to the joint Book Club meeting to share with the students. After briefly discussing each book she brought with her, the boys were asked which of the books they would like us to purchase. This year, Amy seemed to choose well as the boys wanted all the books for the College library and each one had a long reserve list.

SOCIAL MEDIA

In 2018 there has been a push to get the P.L. Duffy Library online with a social media presence. We have a Facebook page and an Instagram account, both of which aim to connect with library users on a social media platform.
