TRINITY COLLEGE ANNUAL 2018 253 TENNIS

TENNIS

The tennis season for 2018 was expected to be a close competition between four PSA schools, of which Trinity was one.

We had been building up to this season for a number of years since Josh Martelli (12.4), Leyton Ashby (12.6) and Ian Xavier (12.1) all joined the team as Year 8 students. They have proved to be the backbone for several years and when you add our current number one player, Jerome Iacone (11.8) we gave ourselves a real chance of a PSA title. While this did not eventuate at the end of the season, just two sets and a few games separated us from securing the title this year. The losses against Christ Church Grammar School and Hale School in contests that could have easily gone our way proved the difference in the end.

I give full credit to our 1st team members for their continued determined efforts in tennis. It is so pleasing to see them develop their tennis knowledge, skills and experience. As a spectator, it is a privilege to be able to watch them perform each Saturday morning and entertain all those watching. It is so typical of Trinity College students to display a ‘never say die’ approach and very high standards of sportsmanship.

I acknowledge the efforts and contributions of the following people: Firstly, our Captain, Josh Martelli, who has been an outstanding captain in his leadership, desire to always work hard at training and setting a great example by the way he conducts himself on the court.

My thanks go to all the parents who have supported the team so well and, in particular, Mrs Dorina Martelli, Mr John Martelli and Mrs Sagaya Xavier.

For many years now, we have had the expertise of Brendan Malarkey (’01) as our professional coach and, again, he has given strong support to the whole tennis program at Trinity. Once more, Jerome Iaconi made the State Junior team in tennis. At the Australian Championships for the Pizzey Cup, WA finished second to NSW. Following the team’s event, an individual singles event was held and Jerome is now the holder of the Australian Junior Singles title. He is just the second player from WA to hold this title.

Moving towards the 2018/2019 tennis season, the Term 4 2018 matches count towards the overall result along with those played in Term 1 of 2019. This will be the first time this arrangement is in place. We will have a young team, with many of them gaining experience from Term 1, so we can look to the future with confidence.
