HEAD OF YEAR 7 AWARD

YEAR 7

For the Class of 2023, it has been a very eye opening and instrumental year of development which will serve as an introduction to what these boys are likely to experience in the coming years at Trinity College.

This year, we have focused on the College motto of being a Man for Others . We have identified that the phrase ‘Man for Others’ is very easy to ‘say’ – instead we have focussed our attention on our ‘actions’ and how they demonstrate being a Man for Others.

Looking back to Orientation Day and seeing the many excited, and possibly concerned, faces, it is amazing to stop for a minute and identify just how fast the first year has passed. It is also important to realise how wonderfully successful the year has been.

The initial transition from Junior School to Secondary School was signified with the completion of the challenging and educational retreat to Camp Kelly in Dwellingup. Here, the boys realised what they were facing and identified some of the obstacles they would have to overcome. They were also able to forge new friendships and to consolidate old ones. The boys and I would like to thank Mr Brett Silver, Mr Peter Oliver and Miss Tess Warner for their leadership and support in running such a significant event. Two and half days away from home created a pathway for the boys to explore their potential in the perfect environment away from the haste of the city lifestyle.

As a cohort, the boys have been introduced to many important activities and events that have engaged them to think about themselves, others and their faith. We have been able to find time within our busy schedule at TC and time outside of normal hours to provide a program that focusses on the development of the individual and others in the strongest sense possible. The initiation of the TC Expo in the Sports Centre, exploration of the Matagarup Bridge walk, the performance of the Year 7 musical showcase, the debates during our open forum and the councillor moneyball activity were all firsts for our year group and also at TC. These extra activities have challenged the boys physically and mentally and have provided an important outlet of exploration outside the classroom environment.

It is very hard to go past the exceptional talent, competitiveness and determined nature of the Year 7 cohort on the sporting fields. I have been particularly happy and impressed with how the boys go about competing in all PSA events. Not only have they been extremely willing to get involved, they have also been very successful both individually and in team situations and they are congratulated on their efforts and success. This attitude will ensure a competitive edge and, hopefully, rewarded success as they progress into their senior years at TC.

The students’ development and success has not only been in sport. I have been very pleased with the interest shown and energy displayed when it has come to providing time and support for others. The Brother Olly Wheelchairs for Kids step-a-thon challenged the boys to experience a little bit of pain for a very worthy gain. Their efforts enabled Brother Olly to send more wheelchairs for disadvantaged children in developing world countries. The boys also banded together to run and raise funds for the Edmund Rice Day by sacrificing their enjoyment and having to run events in each PCG. This significant event was also pivotal in reminding us about the importance of the Edmund Rice heritage and the legacy we continue to promote.

In such a busy year, it is very important to thank and acknowledge the hard work of the people who are responsible for enhancing the lives of each student in

Mr David Allen
