Cross Country

The cross country team finished the season in fifth place in the PSA, which gives the impression of not a highly successful season. However, this overall team result does not give an accurate indication of the many individual successes we enjoyed this season.

It is very typical of Trinity College cross country teams that almost all team members show substantial improvement in fitness, speed and determination throughout every season. Those characteristics were again very evident this season, with so many of the squad willing to challenge themselves to continually improve their times.

When analysing the team performance after each race, our top ten runners were an equal match against all other schools. However, this year we lacked depth in the squad and our scores often blew out over the next five scoring runners across the finish line. In a year when we always needed every single runner to be available for each race, injury and illness also seemed to have a greater impact on some of our race results.

For many individuals in our squad, this was a season to remember. Runners who had not previously run into a scoring position achieved this and eight runners achieved full colours by the end of the season. Particular mention should go to Benjamin Allen (11.1), Jaycob Kell (11.6) and Caden Barnett (7.3) who all achieved an individual first place in a PSA race. Following the State Schools Cross Country Championships, three of our students were selected for the WA team, with Francis Moschilla (9.1), Benjamin Allen and Caden Barnett being worthy selections for the WA team to compete in Queensland.

This year, we embarked on another cross country tour to Europe. Starting in London, our runners competed in the Park Run at Bushy Park. This particular park is where the ‘park runs’ throughout the world first began and we were part of 1,200 runners on the day. Our boys received some excellent coaching prior to the race from Mara Yamauchi and had a question and answer session with her after the race. Mara has represented Great Britain in Olympic and Commonwealth Games as a marathon runner. The next day we travelled to Richmond for another park run in which we dominated with four of the first five runners over the line from Trinity. The next stop was Paris and the boysexperienced a training run with Mame-Ibra Anne. He is the current top French runner over 400 metres and really provided some great motivation for the boys. Finally, after a two day visit to the snow a Chamonix, we travelled to Zurich for their annual marathon. This also was a great experience for the boys who all competed in the ten kilometre race and then were able to witness the finish of the full marathon. This year Miss Tess Warner was the cross

country manager. Her organisational ability ensured we had a trouble-free season. Parents were always fully informed about races, organised for the fundraiser barbecue and rostered for morning tea. Equipment for all races was well organised in advance. I thank her for a great season and the work she did for our final windup. Finally, I acknowledge the support we always receive from our parents and friends who continually give great encouragement to the boys as they give their all in every race.

Next year we should have a very competitive team with a some younger runners showing excellent promise for many years to come.
