The 2018 season commenced in April when Mr Damien Hansen and I, as well as a group of Years 9–12 students, departed Perth International Airport for our tour to Singapore.
This tour breathed positivity and belief into the group of boys who went; coming home with some fantastic wins, including a 2-1 win against the Singapore National Women’s team and the knowledge that they had played exceptional hockey in unfamiliar conditions. Highlights from the tour included visits to Universal Studios and Singapore Zoo, the Amazing Race – Singapore Edition, several well-executed short corners, a cohesive team effort and Edward Pownall’s (12.5) unique goal celebration.
The attitude built whilst on tour resonated into the beginning of the season, which provided encouraging efforts and results across the board. The 1st XI, coached by Mr Frank Main (’09) and Mr Damien Hansen and managed by me, had a solid first round, with a 4-1 win against Guildford Grammar School and hard-fought draws against Aquinas College and Wesley College, putting themselves on the radar of the other PSA schools. Unfortunately, the success in round one could not be replicated in the second round with just one narrow win again against Guildford. Captain, Harrison Pell (12.3), was awarded Fairest and Best for the second year in a row. He was supported by an exceptionally solid back line, including Edward Pownall, who was voted runner-up Fairest and Best and Dejan Bouwhuis (11.1), who received the award for Most Improved. Debutant Year 9, Isaac Morrison (9.4), led the forward line and was leading goal scorer for the season.
The 2nd XI was coached by Mr Alistair Hay. Despite not winning during the season, the team had some close losses against both Wesley and Guildford. The goal scoring in 2018 was greatly improved from previous seasons, thanks to the forward power of Jess Higgins (10.4) and Nicholas Caddy (10.1). It was at the other end of the pitch, however, that the 2nds shone; with the three Year 12 players and Captains, Aiden Galvin (12.8), Joshua Reaper (12.4) and Benjamin Olivieri (12.7) guiding the team and frequently sending saving goals and sending the ball back the other way. The Fairest and Best Award was shared between Aiden and Joshua, whilst Benjamin was granted the Service and Contribution Award due to stepping up to an assistant coach role after breaking his hand in the season.
This year, the Years 8 and 9 teams were combined to form a Middle School division. The Middle A team was coached by Miss Anjelica Mallis and guided by Captains Isaac Morrison and Benjamin Fels (9.6). The team continued to improve throughout the 2018 season, finishing with four wins, four losses and two draws; showing great promise for the future of Trinity hockey. Isaac Morrison had an exceptional first season at Trinity, taking out the Fairest and Best Award, whilst Lleyton Ardagh (8.1) was awarded Most Improved and Josh Kirkaldy (9.2) received the Coaches’ Award.
Ms Claire Wilson
boys continued to fight throughout, despite gaining little success on the scoreboard. As a team they are commended on their resolve and determination for the season. Myles Brown (8.5) was awarded the Service and Contribution Award, the Fairest and Best Award went to Samuel Kaeser (8.2) and Ivan Khuu (8.7) received the Coaches’ Award.
The Middle C team; a combination of Years 7 and 8 students, was coached by Mr Damien Hansen. This team worked largely on developing their skills and improving on their hockey knowledge during the season. The Service and Contribution Award was granted to Matthew Koetser (7.1), whilst James Kenwery (7.8) was given the Coaches’ Award and Benjamin Byas (8.3) was the Most Valuable Player for the season. An honourable mention also goes to Pascal Min Oo (8.5) for his excellent attitude and skills.
Mrs Jodie Green coached the Year 7A team, with the assistance of Mr Damien Hansen. The boys started the season well and, despite some ups and downs, maintained positivity and good sportsmanship during the season. The most consistent player for the season was Sebastian Herrington (7.1). The tight contest of Fairest and Best was eventually awarded to Xander Macdonald (7.2), whilst Lennox McGrath (7.6) received the award for runner up.
Overall the season showed some growth for many of the Trinity hockey teams and the spark of a successful future. As always, the coaches are thanked for their efforts for the season and a warm thank you is also given to Miss Rebecca Porter who assisted the Middle School goalkeepers throughout 2018. The Friends of Hockey committee is also thanked for its contributions during the season, assisting with tour, organising fundraisers and the awards presentation dinner.
We are looking forward to continuing to grow and develop as a community in 2019.
Miss Claire Wilson
