Rowing
Once again, this has been an exceptional season, with many more wins than the hard-fought third at the Head of the River. The fine show of character across the College – parents, staff and the man in the arena, was something to see!
The College is proud of this representation of our TC Spirit: • Josh Hicks (‘08), winning gold, as part of the Men’s IV crew at the Rowing World Championships, for the first time in 26 years • Mr Ivan Banks, Mr Michael Burgess, and Mr Stephen Leahy (’78), with enormous support, who provided the innovative approach that set us up as one of the few schools in the country that doesn’t have to trailer boats, due to having a fleet of boats at both the school and at the racing course
• the Old Boys, under Mr Peter Torre (‘89), providing a club house at Champion Lakes
• the Leone, Attwater and Milburn families for their expertise and engineering in re-shaping the shed and club house with an army of workers and parents
• Mr Dave Chokolich on the tractor, leading the busy bee, before we even started in Term 3.
Josh Stops (’18), who left Trinity to take up an apprenticeship at the end of 2017, never really left the crew as he came back to help fill in and coach his team mates and hurt as much as any when we didn’t quite get there. Like Sol Coster (’17) and others, once they leave Trinity, they will always be a part of the club. Thank you to Mr Banks for his enormous support of the
Mr Phil Jurjevich
College and the club, as well as his support for every Trinity student and staff member – we thank you and will miss you.
The rowers and coaches can be very proud of our brave campaign and no one stopped trying. Even if the win was getting away, the brave effort was there for everyone to see with John Lagan (11.5) racing the distance for second place off his seat and Daniel MacRae (9.6) racing with a broken oar but never giving up. Also, Lachlan Moroney (9.8), losing his oar and having it thrown back by Thomas Gavin (9.7) went on to win the 9As in a record time. These, coupled with the 9Bs winning and setting a record and the 4th VIII in a brutal side-by-side came from half a length down, and win. They had trained for this with their call of “no way Christ Church”.
We commend Hale School on a wonderful performance to win the 1st VIII. Our boys won three of the six short-course races, the Term 4 regattas hosted by Guildford Grammar School and Aquinas College and held level with Hale for 1,000 metres at the Head of the Riv-er, to show a commitment that a coach and a club can be proud of. Hale had an average er-go score 13 seconds faster than ours, which is significant, but never an excuse. We are very proud of all our crews and the boys who tried for seats but didn’t make it. For those who raced and didn’t get the win, your character and brave commitment has been sensational and we are proud of you. For me, we are all winners from this year.
This year we also celebrate many Trinity Old Boys performing at the highest stage: • Josh Hicks (’08) as World Champion in the Fours
• David Watts (‘09) in the Men’s Double Sculls
• Rohan James (‘16), Thomas Norman (’16),
John Pisano (’16), Samuel Cocks (‘16),
James Marthins (’17) and Andrew Le (‘17), and current students Joseph Pinto (12.8),
Asher Fatin (12.1), Joel Taylor (12.6),
Jordan Tyson (12.7) and Alexander Rossi (11.7), representing WA – with Rohan James,
Andrew Le and Jamie Hewlett (’04) making the selection in the Australian team
• Mr Paul Bolton, coaching the Youth VIII and the Pathway VIII, with the best nine from the
PSA and WA, including the five Trinity rowers listed above – the Western Australian Pathway
VIII crew went on to win the Australian selection regatta and they are under consideration to travel to Prague as the Australian Junior VIII
• Rohan James (’16) has won the Scull and made the Australian team, in which he has won the
Eights and Pair for Australia
• Alexander Rossi having the best power-to-weight in the country from the ergo trials.
Because of the generosity of parents and the Old Boys we have taken major steps forward; and these people are our secret weapon. Thank you, David and Louise, for your work and leadership and the extreme generosity of Tanja, Jules, Sonya, Mirella, Mario, Jill, Jen, Andrea, Donna, Tim, Silvia, Armando, Janine, Damien and all involved! I apologise for all the work that went into the tour from the parents and the energy and support of the rowers that did not eventuate – ultimately, I take responsibility.
For the third year in a row, Ashleigh has worked with amazing young coaches to give us the most successful Year 9 group, with three regattas in which we had a clean sweep and won every race. Excellent camaraderie and team work from all the coaches deserves a very big thank you from the boys and the College. Personally, I also thank Sam O’Connell (’09) and Liam Dee (’07). With the inclusion of Sam and Liam, our club has reached new heights – Liam has refurbished five boats and made the whole split fleet work. Sam is tireless and has seen a season of clockwork planning. I have turned up to work every day to happy energised people that have lifted the club – thank you.
The students have shown great leadership as well. Our leaders and prize winners:
Captains Year 9 Samuel Attwater (9.3) Year 10 Rowan Frankowiak (10.2) Year 12 Joel Taylor – Captain of Coxswains (12.6) Year 12 Asher Fatin (12.1) and Damian Pisano (12.4)

Thomas Payne (12.6) receives a special club builder award for the extra work he has put in through the season – designing t-shirts, making videos and working hard to lift effort through all winter sessions. J P Poeira also received an award for being such a driving force in the kitchen and around the club and always turning up for the optional work and adding enormous energy.
Five VIIIs were named this year: the Pisano Spirit, the Kris Kaminskis, the Joseph Tamigi, the Lim May San and the Br D.M McCabe. These boats were named to recognise those people who have gone above and beyond what is expected with their hard work and support for Trinity rowing in building the club.
As well as our Captains, we have also had significant winners that go unnoticed: Harrison Min Oo (11.4) stepped up this year, Thomas Fry (12.4), Max Ryan (10.1), Ivan Panetta, Owen Milburn, Sean Harrison (11.6), Jakob Strohmeier (10.4), Samuel Keenan (12.1), Joseph Ricci, Ethan Lam (10.1), Stephen Franse (8.3), Louis Wiinschl (9.5), Sebastian Teo (10.6), Nicholas Bradley-Moore, Jaxon Fong (9.2), Nick Biundo (9.4), Carlos Torre (9.1), Lachlan Moroney, Thomas Edwards (9.2) and Jason Landon (10.2) have all quietly gone about doing what needed to be done without seeking acknowledgement. That is what makes a great team – doing what you can because you see it needs doing not because you will get a reward.
Our Old Boys kept the fire burning and this year Rohan James (’16), Matt Dwyer, Sam Cocks (’16), John Pisano (’16), Brennan Edwards (’16), Rhys Grant (’04), Brendan Murray (’07), Jack Cleary (’12), Joe Tamigi (’99), James Marthins (’17), Tom Norman (’16), Nick Sumich (’16), Andrew Le (’17), Peter Torre (’89) and Josh Stops (’18) have all rowed or coached when we needed help and are named in our 1st XV of Old Boys – a new class of boat.
We have a special team thank you – coaches, parents, staff and especially our rowers who have bravely explored their capacity and looked out for each other.

TRINITY COLLEGE ANNUAL 2018 237 RUGBY
RUGBY
The 2018 rugby season began in a manner befitting our new ‘whole club’ philosophy, by having an Open Day for all Trinity rugby players – from the Years 5/6 team through to our senior teams. It was a great way to kick-off what would prove to be a memorable year for Trinity rugby. The day focussed on team building, fitness and skills, which included group work activities, a talk from performance coach, Mr Dwayne Nestor, and finished with a barbecue hosted by the Trinity College Rugby Club (TCRC). The culmination of the festivities was honouring and acknowledging the boys who would be representing the College at its highest level – the selection of the 1st XV – with the traditional handing out of the coveted jerseys, generously supplied by the hard work of the TCRC.
There were significant changes to the coaching and managing staff for the senior teams this year. Mr Alex Terry seized the opportunity to leave the relative safety of his computer to assume the role of Head Coach for the 2nd XV team. New sports teacher, Mr Tim Carslaw, took the role of Assistant 1st XV Coach and Mr Alex Stajka became the Head Coach for the 1st XV. Mrs Candice Brown was tasked with the role of overseeing the management of both senior teams.
The declining numbers across the PSA meant that our three senior teams were reduced to two. However, in the words of our Senior Coach, the folding of the Year 10 side meant that he “could now hand pick for the 1st XV and reward players who deserved to pull on the jersey … playing 1st XV rugby would be hard earned and not given away cheaply.”
The opening game of the season, against reigning 2017 Brother Redmond Cup winners Scotch College, was always going to be a tough ask and whilst neither senior team was able to chalk-up a first win, the boys demonstrated passion in spades and proved to themselves and others that they could match it with the best in PSA. In the end, the season provided both senior teams with a few wins, a draw and some close and painful losses. However, what it did show us is that with additional pre-season training and continued dedication, we will be serious contenders to win the cup next year.
The senior players also embraced their role as true Men for Others by selflessly volunteering their time each week to assist with the coaching and mentoring of the Years 5/6 team. This was a real commitment and I especially extend a huge thank you to the Captain of the 2nd team, Samuel Peirce (12.3), who came along each week, organised other boys to assist him and demonstrated true leadership.
To the departing Year 12 students – Lex Agate (12.6), Thomas Barns (12.8), Rhys Bormolini (12.3), Aonghas Bradley-Moore (12.2), Jamie Kinninmont (12.3), Timothy Feasey (12.4), Dean Law Yim Wan (12.7), Xavier Leatherland (12.2), Thomas Maher (12.8), Justin Matthys (12.1), Owen Milburn (12.6), Matthew Paulet (12.2), Samuel Peirce (12.3), Alexander Pennefather (12.8), Isaiah Reuben (12.5), Ethan Roux (12.2), Dylan Salvia (12.5) and Reuben Watts (12.7) – it has been an absolute pleasure watching you play with pride for your beloved ‘blue and green’ jersey and getting to know all of you this yea. You will all be truly missed.
Mrs Candice Brown
We thank all the parents who came along to the games and watched their sons play – sometimes in the harshest of conditions. Your support throughout the year has been greatly appreciated by both the players and the staff.
I also personally extend my gratitude to new TCRC President, Mr Darrell Stops. It would have been an almost impossible task to do this job without your support. Your genuine care for all the boys and the promotion of the ‘game played in Heaven’ will see Trinity rugby grow in strength each year.
