Year 11
Two Year 11 students, Jean-Paul Starkie (11.8) and Lachlan Sibosado (11.7), organised a few intrepid ‘volunteer’ teachers to go along with them in the World’s Greatest Shave, raising awareness and funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. The boys set benchmark amounts where, if reached, a few teachers were required to go through with shaving their heads. The total amount raised was over $6,800; enough that even Ms Alison Mackenzie from the library sported a new ‘grazed’ look for the rest of 2018!
While on the topic of fundraising, a special mention is made of Samuel Minniti (11.6) who organised a group of his friends to sell lolly bags and hot dogs, raising money for Telethon and in particular, Princess Margaret Hospital, whom he has a special affiliation with. Samuel ended up raising just over $2,700. He couldn’t have said it better with his statement, “having the sense of giving back to the community is a wonderful feeling that I encourage everyone to be a part of”.
I am proud of the number of Year 11 students that involve themselves in the cultural pursuits our College offers. The Year 11 group has representation in every senior music group, dance group and chorale. We had 15 students take part in this year’s College production The Pirates of Penzance, with nine of them performing on stage as pirates or policemen. Declan Allen (11.6) secured one of the lead roles and performed outstandingly. The dedication and commitment to producing a truly world class production was aweinspiring with all the time and energy taking place outside normal school time. Anybody who was fortunate enough to get a seat for the production would agree it was nothing short of spectacular and the boys’ maturity and performances were of a quality beyond their years.
At the beginning of Term 1, the Year 11 Councillors attended the GRIP Leadership Conference at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre. This gave the councillors opportunities to network with other school leaders of their age as well as obtain skills for leading and influencing others in positive ways. Some of the skills picked up on the day allowed the councillors to work effectively with their PCGs to successfully achieve objectives and goals, which were especially helpful when it came to their PCG fundraisers. This year’s councillors were an outstanding bunch of young men and, among other things, were instrumental in organising the design for the 2019 Leavers’ jacket, the theme for the 2019 Ball and their individual PCG fundraisers.
On the topic of leadership, a handful of Year 11 students, after attending the Amanda Young Youth Leadership Camp, introduced the Greenbatch initiative to the College through the Trinity College Environmental Committee. This resulted in new purple bins being placed around the School to collect plastic bottles for recycling into 3-D printer filaments. The notion that ‘everybody is a leader’ is one that has been thrown around this cohort since Year 9 in the Becoming Men program. Personal leadership continues to be an important aspect of the Year 11 ethos and I’m happy to see so many of the boys maturing and taking more ownership of their own actions over the years. Throughout 2018, we had presentations from guest speakers, Mr Rod Bridges and Mr Paul Dillon. The presentations aimed at continuing to build each boy’s ability to make good decisions in real life situations involving the influences of alcohol and drugs. Finally, I take this opportunity to thank the Year 11 Pastoral Care teachers: Mrs Rosa West (11.1), Ms Lissa Coleman (11.2), Mr Paul Bolton (11.3), Mr Craig Adams (11.4), Ms Lisa Laurino (11.5), Mr Mark Dodd (11.6), Ms Danielle Pieraccini (11.7) and Mr Adam Gage (11.8). Without their tireless support and guidance of the boys, we would not have had such a wonderful year. I know Ms West will not be joining us next year as she takes up her new position as Head of Campus Ministry, but I am looking forward to working with everyone else again in 2019.
