TRINITY PIPES & DRUMS

Mrs Maureen Barnett

Trinity Pipes & Drums has kept busy throughout the year with performances, including assemblies, the Quarry Concert, Anzac Day, Senior Music Night and the annual Indigenous War Memorial Service.

The Armadale Highland Gathering which is now an annual event on our calendar, was a highlight this year. As well as playing as a Trinity Pipes & Drums, our drummers formed part of a massed drum corps performing a fanfare to the huge crowd of spectators. We were very pleased that Trinity was well represented in this event and proud of our drummers who made the effort to learn the required music.

We were privileged to have two visits from Alisdair McLaren (’96). Alasdair is a world champion piper and the Director of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland. He is the current Pipe Major of The Pipers’ Trail, which is the Edinburgh Tattoo’s resident pipe band. The students really enjoyed meeting Alisdair and, hopefully, were encouraged by his enthusiasm and passion for pipe bands. As the 2018 school year ends, I am reflecting on our progress and happy to say that Trinity College Pipes & Drums is thriving and working towards increasing student participation so we can provide further exciting opportunities.

Trinity Pipes & Drums is a great tradition that continues to offer students a cultural music experience with fun, friendships and discipline, creating a worthwhile activity.

I appreciate all the support and hard work from drum tutor, Mr Julian Anderson and Drum Major and drill instructor, Mr Peter Jones, and I thank all the students for making 2018 an enjoyable year.

TRINITY DANCE PROGRAM

GUYS IN GROOVE, BOYS IN GROOVE, IMPERIUM AND YEAR 8 DANCE

Dance and the Performing Arts have really flourished in 2018. Along with our well-established dance groups, Guys In Groove (GIG) and Boys In Groove (BIG), we now have Dance as an elective in Year 8 and our elite performance group, Imperium.

Dance not only allows our students to focus on developing their dance technique, it also allows them to do so in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment. The boys learn to develop and interpret choreography, perform various works, reflect on dance and experiment with various styles that they wouldn’t ordinarily try. We have devised an effective program aimed at developing the boys’ confidence, physical, interpersonal and communicative skills so that it is not only challenging, but also rewarding.

Mrs Paula Nicolleto

Our extra-curricular dance outlet for the boys at Trinity allows them to access the potential curriculum and personal benefits of dance and further explore the skills they need should they choose to pursue dance further.

Our first performance this year was held in June as a combined showcase with our Drama students. This was a fabulous evening of entertainment by our amazingly talented performers. The showcase was a platform for students to undertake the challenge of performing solos and a rehearsal for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. Gibney Hall was packed with very proud parents and family members and was one of the biggest turn-outs for a dance showcase – with around 90 students representing Dance (not to mention our Drama students too). The Catholic Performing Arts Festival for Dance took place in August at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and the boys were able to maintain their energy and excitement throughout their performance. Our Junior School students performed a High School Musical number to I Don’t Dance and our Senior School students danced to a monologue set to music about anti-bullying. The boys represented the College with great pride and enthusiasm.

Upon completion of the Performing Arts, boys auditioned to join the performance group, Imperium. This is set to be our elite squad of dancers, who were introduced to the College at Presentation Night. These students have continued to learn more about composition and improvisation through technique classes towards the end of their school year to further develop their skills.

Our Junior School dancers (BIG) have also added a second routine to their repertoire ready for Presentation Night. This number also includes some of our ‘big boys’ making a guest appearance in the performance.

Thank you to all the dancers, parents, Dr Robert Braham, Mrs Margaret Denniston and all the fabulous Music and Performing Arts staff for their support and encouragement throughout the year. We are already looking forward to 2019 and the further progression of Dance within the College, especially with our first Year 12 ATAR Dance student!

TRINITY COLLEGE ANNUAL 2018 165 DRAMA

DRAMA

From juggling, to stage combat and even fencing, it is safe to say Drama at Trinity College has been a lot of fun this year.

A defining factor of 2018 Drama has been the crossyear group development. It has been wonderful to observe the Years 11 and 12 students regularly working together to produce some truly effective performances as well as attending workshops on offer. In addition, our senior students’ support of Middle School Drama has been outstanding. These students regularly visit the Middle School students, rehearse with them and attend their performances. The impact and positive influence this has on the younger students at the College is invaluable. A special mention goes to our Drama Captain, Ray Teakle (12.1) and Vice-captain Luca Crevacore (12.5) who went above and beyond in the name of Drama.

The Year 12 ATAR class reached new levels with both their performance and written work this year. All students involved should be very proud of the scripted monologues and original solo performances they put together. This was also acknowledged in the results and feedback the students received after entering their pieces in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival and Drama Showcases throughout the year. These students were also the first to receive full colours for Drama which is testament to the significant impact they have made to Drama as well as their hard work and dedication to the subject.

The Year 11 ATAR students entered a scripted performance excerpt of Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival, receiving an Outstandingaward for the section. This was a fantastic result for the group who worked hard and continually aimed to improve their performance skills and technique. It has been refreshing to see this group of students take on roles and texts that have challenged them and allowed the students to think outside the box.

It has also been a successful year for our Middle School classes. We were thrilled with the range of performances from Years 7–10 that were created and in turn, the skills students acquired and developed. Throughout the year groups, we had an excellent variety of items for the Drama Dance Showcase evening held in Term 2. These performance items gave students an opportunity to perform their work to the wider College community which was a great experience for all involved. Students demonstrated their eagerness and passion for Drama by attending workshops where they were able to develop their voice, movement and improvisational skills. Mr Ben Mitchell is an integral part of the Drama team and his involvement and teaching of Middle School Drama is greatly appreciated. We also thank Mr Clint Testa for taking some of the Year 7 Drama classes.

This has been a brilliant year to look back on and one to be proud of. It certainly makes us excited for the future of Drama at Trinity College.
