J UNIOR SCHOOL

JUNIOR SCHOOL

When we talk with the boys in the Junior School, the phrase Men for Others is often used. The boys hear and learn about this motto from the moment they arrive at the College. It has a great message and is simple and succinct, but it means so much. In the Junior School, we promote this mantra regularly, trying to ‘catch’ the boys being Men for Others. We also provide opportunities for the boys where they can put this mantra into action, such as Christian Service.

The boys were greeted at the start of the year with a Junior School that had been renovated during the summer holidays. The refurbishment involved a new configuration to the Library and Inclusive Education area, two classrooms being enlarged, the addition of a Chillout Room, new toilets, the entrance and office space modernised and a new multi-purpose Science and Technology Room, complete with state-of-the-art technology to assist the teaching that will take place in the room. The introduction of the Science and Technology Room coincided with a raft of new learnings in this area. From the use of Surface Pro devices, to Coding Clubs, a variety of robots and programs to get the best use out of them and some excellent teacher leaders in the areas of IT, the boys are exposed to engaging learning experiences. This year, many of the boys were lucky enough to have a learning opportunity using the oculus rift in the VR Lab. The potential of this room in future years for engaging and stimulating learning is mind-blowing.

I believe a Trinity education focuses on a holistic education. Whilst the importance of learning to be literate and numerate cannot be understated, a wellrounded education provides opportunities for our boys to experience so much more – the beauty of singing or playing an instrument, having the opportunity to move and express ourselves through dance, through being a team mate, learning independence and developing friendships through camps are all life skills. Also, learning about representing our School and ourselves as the best people we can be, being ambassadors when we have visitors or when we leave the College on excursions and sporting and performing arts events. Using manners, saying thank you, shaking someone’s hand when you greet them – this is all part of a Trinity education.

Faith is at the centre of what we do, and our actions are an excellent expression of how we can live out our faith. Our regular Masses are lovely community moments which are well supported by parents and we have a great tradition of encouraging each boy to sit with his family. Earlier in the year, as part of LifeLink Day, every boy made a card and wrote a message of support and hope to someone who is marginalised. The mission money we raise each week goes primarily towards the College’s charities in India, where a vast difference is made to these children’s lives. Examples of our faith in action include contributions of 20 laundry baskets full of food items for The Shopfront this Christmas, raising money to provide six wheelchairs for Br Olly’s Wheelchairs for Kids and Ms Alana Brennan’s initiative to sell daffodils to raise awareness and funds for cancer.

As a school community, I believe one of our strengths is the diversity of faiths, backgrounds, heritage and even post codes of the people who walk through our gates. The Junior School is a very supportive community; we share similar goals, the most important one being to work together to make each boy the best person he can be. The Junior School has a positive feel, it is a place filled with energy. The new boys to the School usually take only a little time to identify themselves as forever belonging to TC. They love coming to School and there is a bond between the Junior School boys that unites them.

TOBA is also a significant part of our community. The assemblies and connections with the Old Boys are simply brilliant. The President of TOBA, Mr Peter Torre (’89), and other members of the TOBA Executive are excellent role models for the boys, whether they are passionately sharing the history of the College, introducing us to rowing, promoting the pipes and drums, leading war cries, or dressing up as Santa, the assemblies are truly unique. I also thank men from the Golden Heritage Club for visiting the College to be interviewed and tell a few stories about their time in School. Our boys gain so much from this experience.

I also recognise those who contribute to this community. I feel blessed to be overwhelmed every time we ask for volunteers for book club, sports days and excursions. Our parents willingly attend parent evenings, Father’s Day breakfasts, Mother’s Day Masses and camps. Every time we ask for a cake to be made or morning tea to be provided, we have an abundance of food. It is also wonderful to finish each school week with an assembly, where there are so many parents and grandparents in attendance, it helps create a great atmosphere. Thank you for your positive support of all that encompasses your boy’s education and for wanting to pull together with us to make the Junior School a special place.

It is important that the School is seen as a safe and supportive environment – that is how the best learning takes place. As a School we understand boys. Whether it be the time spent with the boys on camps, on the sports field or in trying to plan a curriculum to engage your sons, the teachers all have your boys at the forefront of what we do and I feel that our Junior School teachers know your boys well. I wish to thank them for all they do and I am genuinely grateful to have such a cohesive staff.

I wish to acknowledge those who have helped to shape the Junior School this last year. The Assistant Heads of the Junior School, Mr Bernard Le Tessier and Ms Evelyn Temmen, have contributed positively and their work ethic and enthusiasm are features of their commitment to improving education for your boys. Our staff are a harmonious group and their collective and diverse abilities is our strength. I farewell and thank Miss Natalie Kenny for her six years in the Junior School. She has been an excellent teacher and will be missed. Thank you also to the parent body, which continues to be supportive of all that happens at Trinity. Finally, the boys – it is wonderful to guide and assist you to grow into fine young gentlemen and Men for Others.
