PSA SURFING AND BODY BOARDING TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the week leading up to the event our coastline experienced the perfect storm with the wind creating a surging swell and developing some nice banks along the Trigg foreshore. However, the day itself was perfect, with a light seven knot southerly wind with a two to two and a half metre swell.

The contest followed a tag-team format, where surfers competed in a team with one surfer in the water at any time. Kelly Schneider (12.5) was the first senior surfer in the water with two high-scoring clean barrel rides. Jakson Egan (11.1) and Nicholas Waller (12.7) were next in the overhead high waves. Nicholas Deleonardis (12.3), the first senior bodyboarder in the water, surprised the crowd with an inspiring somersault off the lip. Malaki ‘mini lid’ Rodoreda (12.2) and Ethan Roux (12.2) were next to take to the waves in the senior bodyboarding heat and earned Trinity some very decent points for their heat.

Adam Pearce (8.4), Reyne Schneider (8.7) and Brad Lawrence (9.3) represented the College in the junior surfing heat, with some remarkable rides scoring much needed points for Trinity. Madoc Lanfear Appleby (7.2), Harry Duncan (8.1) and Brandon O’Driscoll (7.2) finished the heats with the junior bodyboarding. It was a huge day – Trinity came fourth and can be proud of the surfing team that represented the College with pride at the 2018 Championship. I thank Mr Paul Van Vliet for his support and work on the day and to all the Trinity parents who attended the event.

SWIMMING

The 2018 swimming season seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye. One moment the boys were lining up, with great anticipation, for their first Term 4 breakfast, the next moment it was over. In between, there were some extraordinary events and performances, culminating of course, in Trinity’s fifth consecutive year in the PSA top three.

Before I continue, it would be proper to reflect on this achievement, for a moment. In its history, Trinity has had two stints near the top of the PSA swimming tree; the first in 2006/7, where Trinity jumped from fourth (2005) to second (2006) and then first (2007); only to fall to fourth again in 2008. A brief shining star, that burned out too soon.

Contrast that with the second period of success in 2014 to 2018. Trinity has finished third, second, third, third, third in the last five years. A sustained period of achievement, without taking the ultimate step. It would be easy to make an argument to say that we are currently experiencing the College’s greatest period of swimming success.

However, this sustained success comes at a price: by the boys who religiously get up each training morning and follow the black line and by the parents and coaches, who give to a greater cause – that of being able to see the faces of their sons/swimmers when they achieve beyond their expectations and combine as a team to create something special. There is nothing wrong with paying this price. It is noble and admirable. It is what turns an event into a journey. It is what allows us to spend the time investing emotionally in the cause and what ultimately makes the fruit of the journey taste sweet.

I love the fact that the Trinity community invests itself so heavily in this process. It shows that the TC Spirit is alive and well. This spirit keeps us striving for better performances year after year and contributes to the fabric of Trinity College.

Now, back to 2018. The leadership group, headed by Captain Ethan Bradley (12.4), was one of the most passionate and organised groups of recent years. Many thanks go to Ethan and his team; not only for their performances, but for the fact that they changed the culture of the team. Social media groups, trudging from PCG to PCG, engaging with the younger year groups and attending events (including training) in large numbers, helps create an atmosphere that encourages participation and giving their best. This was most evident at the Valentine’s Day meet with Perth College. The meet was supposed to be focussed on the younger year groups (it was held on a Tuesday, after senior sport training) ; however, nearly 100 boys attended because of the efforts of the leadership group.

The season builds rapidly towards a culmination at the PSA Inters and the team performed admirably. Firstly, congratulations to Harrison Farmer (7.7) who broke the Under 13 50 metre breaststroke record with a swim of 35.78 seconds and Brendan Best (9.2) who broke the Under 15 50 metre freestyle record with a swim of 25.26 seconds. It takes an amazing swimmer to create new PSA history.

Of course, the success of a campaign is not measured by records alone. In fact, we traditionally use a personal best ratio to determine whether the team has performed at or above expectations. Due to the intensity of the experience (such as nerves), 30%–35% is considered a satisfactory result. In 2018, the team managed a PB ratio of 53%. This makes the night a roaring success and an affirmation that hard work and attention to skill detail will produce fantastic results.

It is also customary to refrain from praising individual performances in a team event; however, some swims on Inters night are worthy of mention; not necessarily

because they win events, but for their inspirational nature and courage. Ethan Bradley captured this spirit with his win in the Open Division 150 metre butterfly. It was a great captain’s swim and an inspiration leading into the relays.

In the Under 13 events, Harrison Farmer, Caden Barnett (7.3) and Ben Cronin (7.6) managed spectacular swims, with Harrison winning all four Division 1 races.

Ashton Fewster (8.4) swam PBs in all his events and his big improvement in the 50 metre backstroke, left the team in a frenzy.

It is not often that a team that doesn’t win any relays, finishes the night in third place, but this is the case with the 2018 team and is testament to the depth and the even nature of the team structure. It was quite an impressive feature of the Inters night.

Finally, a massive thank you goes to the parents, coaches and supporters. Mr Adam Gage provided the team with a first-class website and communication system; the cornerstone of our success. Mr Travis Nederpelt (’03), in his first year back at Trinity, was a wealth of knowledge. Our coaching team of Siobhan Wilkins, James Valentine (’15) and Sam Moffatt (’17) have become much loved and respected leaders.

Finally, once again, I thank Ethan Bradley, Jamie Heslop (12.6) and the leadership team for making 2018 such a fantastic year.

Bring on 2019.
