TRINITY COLLEGE ANNUAL 2018 263 WATER POLO

WATER POLO

The 2017/18 water polo season was a challenging one, with the overall result not reflective of the quality of many of our players.

All players are commended on their commitment to training sessions, great enthusiasm and admirable team spirit throughout the season.

The Year 12 players enjoyed a pre-season meet with some of the Perth College players. The TC/PC meet provided an opportunity for the players to train together, share strategies and socialise. Following this, the 1st team began their vigorous training sessions during the Term 3 school holidays. This season, we welcomed new additions to the 1st team with Rafael Fiore (10. 3), Griffin Woodhouse (10.6) and Andrew Petagna (11.2).

Joshua Reaper (12.4) made an exemplary contribution to the 1st VII as Captain of the team, supported by a highly dedicated Vice-captain, Brock Marrapodi (12.8). Through their superb leadership, support and encouragement, they ensured that players always performed with that TC Spirit. However, even with Liam Martin’s (12.5) lethal left hand, as well as Joshua Reaper’s and Jakson Egan’s (11.1) impressive skills and experience, the 1st team was unable to deliver a win against the strength of the other PSA teams. Despite these results, their resilience and ‘never give up’ attitude was obvious with every performance.

As the season progressed, the 2nd VII started to demonstrate their improved skills and adopt effective strategies. The team is very fortunate to have newcomer, Mr Tim Putt, as their coach, who facilitated and assisted with wins against Wesley College and Guildford Grammar School. Special mention goes to Brendan Murphy (11.8) and Brett Hassett (11.1) who were the team’s top scorers over the season.

WATER POLO AWARDS

All this could not have been accomplished without the support of staff and coaches. The senior teams were coached by 1st VII Coach, Mr Andras Jo-Kovaks, 2nd VII Coach, Mr Tim Putt, 3rd VII Coach, Mr James Valentine (’15), 4th VII Coach Mr Nicholas Petagna (’17) and 5th VII Coach, Mr Glenn Christiansen, who were well supported by Team Managers, Miss Danielle Pieraccini (3rd VII) and Mrs Annika Holland (4th VII). This dedicated group has a love for the sport and has great expertise, but most importantly, they are all wellrespected by their teams.

We were thrilled to welcome Miss Adelaide Garland (Middle A Coach) and Mr Ben Russell (Middle D Coach) to Middle School water polo. The teams are still going strong under the leadership of Trinity Old Boys, Lucas Starkie (’16) and Thomas Cavanagh (’16). Coaches and teams have been well-supported by Middle School managers, Ms Nadia Tati and Ms Danielle Millet.

Trinity College has had a number of talented players who have displayed their skills in water polo throughout the years. Therefore, it is with regret that we say farewell to an excellent group of Year 12 players and thank them for their dedication and contribution. We wish you all the best for the future and look forward to seeing you return to play against us, on the TOBA side, in the future.

I extend my thanks to all our parents who have supported the boys by attending fixtures and ensuring the senior players arrive to early morning training sessions on time. The water polo wind-up was an enjoyable day and it was fabulous to see so many players and parents attend. The day would not have been possible without the help of the parents and managers. A particular mention goes to Mr Rory and Mrs Alaine Reaper and Mr Robert Petagna for their support and contribution to the day. Such support is integral to the continued success of TC water polo. It was also great to see so many people stay afterwards to watch the Coaches/Old Boys/Dads (COD) team play against the 1st players. Grant Rapkoch (9.8) showed the senior boys just what the middle school players are capable of, scoring a goal for the team.

Thank you for a fantastic water polo season. I look forward to getting to know all the newcomers joining us next season, in the continued development of this great sport.
