OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Outdoor Education strives on developing communication, organisation, independence and leadership through practical activities that the boys enjoy.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION – YEARS 7–10 Outdoor Education in Year 7 is focused on building relationships and rapport with staff and students. The boys are involved in a range of activities, including fishing, cycling, paddling and cooking. The boys are encouraged to develop friendships and work in small teams to accomplish their goals. They clearly enjoyed the time outdoors and took the opportunity to de-stress from the rigors of classroom learning. Year 8 students once again showed that there is a need for outdoor education at Trinity, with many students electing to study the course. With five classes throughout 2018, it’s clear that boys enjoyed their experience in Year 7 and were looking to develop their skills even more. Students who elected Outdoor Education continued with similar activities as they did in the Year 7 course; however, they were exposed to more theory. These boys demonstrated their skills on a one-day mountain biking expedition through the John Forrest National Park. Congratulations to all boys who completed the ride. Fires, paddling and snorkeling were introduced to the Year 9 students in 2018 and they thoroughly enjoyed the additional freedom on and in the water. The ability to build a fire to cook on is far from common, with students more skilled in the art of video games. This independence and opportunity to explore will prove important in the Senior School program when students are expected to manage themselves for extended periods of time on expedition. In 2018, Explorus Adventure Learning were again involved in providing a four-day expedition in the south west of Western Australia for our Year 10 boys. Based in Karridale, boys experienced a challenging high ropes

course through the tree tops of the karri forest, explored Giants Cave at night and abseiled the 37 metre cliffs at Wilyabrup. This expedition is the culmination of a number of theory units based on climbing, navigation, ropes, knots and minimal impact. All boys who attended the camp thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I look forward to their involvement in Outdoor Education in 2019.

SENIOR SCHOOL VET COURSES IN OUTDOOR EDUCATION Our Year 11 students tackled a six-day expedition in the north west of Western Australia. Sailing through the islands of the Dampier Archipelago, boys demonstrated the navigational, boating and minimal impact skills they had developed throughout the year. The course is structured around the nationally accredited Certificate II in Sport and Recreation. Successful students will complete the course with external qualifications, such as the Senior First Aid and the Recreational Skipper’s Ticket. The Year 12 Outdoor Education students were challenged on a three-night mountain bike camp along the Munda Biddi Trail. The students were required to plan the expedition and prepare all their own meals as well as lead the group for the three days. The students were outstanding in developing independence and being self-reliant for the duration of the camp. Congratulations to all students involved in Outdoor Education throughout 2018 for such a successful and enjoyable year. A special thank you goes to all staff involved in these expeditions and their dedication to Trinity’s comprehensive off-campus commitments. The passion that Trinity’s Outdoor Education staff have towards providing students with these opportunities is outstanding and they are the vital foundation of this fantastic program. TRINITY COLLEGE ANNUAL 2018

Trinity College’s Outdoor Education program in 2018 once again provided many student experiences and opportunities to learn lifelong skills. Students were encouraged to be independent, self-reliant and to take responsibility for their own learning while developing practical skills in the great outdoors.
