Annual: Trinity 2016

Page 14

College Board This year has been another outstanding year for Trinity College with tremendous success across all areas of student endeavour, particularly when measured across the Four Pillars of a Trinity education being Faith, Academic, Cultural and Sporting programs. The balance and blend of these Pillars provide for a truly remarkable College experience and is most evident in our students living out their College mantra and being Men for Others. The demonstration of being a Man for Others is evident on the sporting field, through the many hours of community service undertaken by Trinity men, through their approach and application to study and a full College experience and in their care and respect for those within the College community and to those without.

As a parent, I take great satisfaction from seeing the result of a Trinity College education; however, as a Board member, I believe I am privileged to witness the dedication and total commitment to the delivery of this outcome by our staff, our leadership team and, of course, our Headmaster, Ivan Banks. To Ivan and all staff, I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Board and the whole Trinity College community. During 2016 we have been fortunate to see the completion of our new Multi-purpose Facility, the first stage in a 20year strategic plan that will ensure Trinity College remains well-positioned to provide a contemporary and balanced education experience maximising our potential as an innercity school. Over coming years, a planned approach to the College facilities will gradually see some buildings replaced as they near the end of their natural life cycle. This necessary investment in the College future is, in a large part, made possible by the generous contribution of families to our school building fund. To those families contributing to this fund, I extend my thanks. Earlier this year, the Trinity College Board met and embraced a key principle of Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA): that ‘all schools should work pro-actively and strategically towards increasing their affordability for a broader range of the population’. A clear demonstration of delivering on this principle is through the assisted programs now offered through Trinity which include: concessions for hardship Edmund Rice bursaries Aboriginal scholarships refugee bursaries family discounts

Mr John Driscoll speaking at the Opening of the New Sports Centre Further to this, the Board is also cognisant of the financial pressures currently being faced by members of Trinity College families and, as a consequence, has implemented the lowest average fee increases that the College has seen for many years. Our Board this year was very fortunate to have the willing support of Hon Christopher Ellison (Deputy Chair), Mr Basil Mistilis (Chair of Finance and Audit Committee), Mr Don Parnell, Mr Stephen Moloney, Mrs Margie Tannock, Ms Jane Deyken-O’Dea and Mr Tony Metcalf. Sadly, our Board lost a dedicated and passionate contributor with the passing of Br Pat Kelly early in the year. As the year ends, we will farewell two Board Members, Ms Jane Deyken-O’Dea and Mr Tony Metcalf, who will retire from the Board after six years of service. Both Jane and Tony have played significant roles on the Board and with professional experience and timeless contributions to the design and development of the Multi-purpose Facility. I thank Jane and Tony for their most valuable contribution to the College Community. Our Board and College is also very fortunate to have Mr Michael Burgess as our College Bursar and Board Secretary. Michael’s professionalism, dedication and technical knowledge of the management of Trinity is quite remarkable and greatly appreciated by the Board. Finally, I would like to thank Headmaster, Mr Ivan Banks, for his unwavering commitment to the leadership and wellbeing of the Trinity College community. Mr John Driscoll (’79) Board Chair
