Year 8
It has been another incredibly busy but productive year for the Year 8 group of 2016. Reflecting back over the year, I have seen a considerable growth in maturity within the group and a developing sense of care and respect for one another.
Mr Julian Fritz Head of Year 8
The continued focus on self-management, goal-setting and personal organisation skills has allowed the boys to achieve some excellent academic results this year whilst also developing some critical skills and abilities that will assist the boys to successfully meet the growing demands placed upon them as they progress along in the Senior School.
The highlight of the year for many boys, came early in the year with the Quest retreat held in Term 1. The retreat provided an opportunity for small groups of Year 8 boys to work closely with a Year 11 Peer Minister who welcomed the boys into their home. Strong friendship bonds were formed, not only among the Year 8 boys but with their Peer Ministers and set a great tone for the year ahead.
The first of the Trinity-Mercedes socials was hosted by Trinity in Term 1. A Carnival Games afternoon provided a great opportunity for the boys and girls to mix, compete and cooperate as they played many enjoyable games during the afternoon. This was followed, in Term 3, by a Black and White themed disco at Mercedes College which was thoroughly enjoyed by all students. The Grandparents’ Morning Tea provided a fantastic opportunity for the boys to welcome and include their grandparents in the College community. A music recital in the Chapel and guided tours of the College campus, were followed by an exquisite morning tea in which the boys ‘turned the tables’ and served and spoilt their grandparents. It was evident from the smiles of both boys and grandparents that it was a day enjoyed equally by both.
This year we have made a real effort to use our PCG time effectively to develop friendships and unity within the Year 8 cohort. Much of this has been driven by a very dedicated and pro-active group of Year 8 Councillors. They have introduced initiatives into the morning PCG period as well as assisting PCG staff in the PCG Video Challenge, Goal Setting, and Letter of Future Self activities.
The Year 8 boys continued their extensive involvement in all manner of academic, sporting, musical and artistic pursuits. On the sporting field the boys played with passion and competitiveness but always displayed sportsmanship and respect to the opposition regardless of the final result.

Many boys were involved in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival helping Trinity win the Zenith Award for the 13th consecutive year. Of particular note was the achievement of Ciaran Paxman (8.2) who was awarded a shield for his secondary pianoforte/pipe organ solo.
As a sign of the boys’ growing awareness of social justice issues, a Year 8 Christian Service group was established in the second half of the year and was keenly attended by more than 20 students. I hope that this willingness to assist those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves continues to become a greater focus as the boys grow in maturity and awareness.
Finally, it would be remiss of me not to mention the contribution of the Pastoral Care teachers throughout the year. Their dedicated, student-focused approach has been greatly appreciated by the students and has certainly made my role such an enjoyable experience.
