Cross Country

The senior Trinity cross country team had an outstanding session where we went through the season undefeated and secured the Moyes Trophy.

Mr Geoff Jamieson Cross Country Coach

The season started with a European cross country tour that took in the cities of Amsterdam, Paris and London. This was the first ever cross country tour and was an amazing experience for those privileged enough to be able to attend. While we had one disappointment in missing the marathon race in Rotterdam, being able to have training sessions in Amsterdam, Paris, an ‘Amazing Race’ format around London and then competing in an athletics event in London’s Lee Valley Regional Park, were just some of the highlights. Some of the other places of interest we experienced included the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, London Tower, Buckingham Palace, Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Mass at Sacre Coeur in Paris, canal tour in Amsterdam and a harbour cruise in Amsterdam with ‘all you can eat’ pancakes.

This season we had a team loaded with many talented runners. However, it must be said that the achievements of the team were the result of a dedicated and uncompromising approach to training and always a determined effort in the actual races. It was clear the boys in the team grew in confidence throughout the season because they had the comfort of knowing they prepared well and the results achieved on a weekly basis were a just reward.

The Year 12 students in the team formed a great leadership group and set an outstanding example to all other team members. As there were so many worthy leaders in the group, a leadership team was appointed. A captain and three vice-captains were appointed. Luke Smith (12.7) was the popular choice as captain and carried out his duties in a very mature and responsible manner. Nicholas Sumich (12.7), Michael Martin (12.8) and Rohan James (12.2) were worthy vice-captains and gave the team great direction, encouragement, support and discipline. While it appears the team was the best in the competition, we faced many challenges throughout the season. The year began with some of our top runners: Michael Martin, Thomas Moorcroft (11.4) and Joshua Baker (12.7) taking the sidelines due to injury and illness. To the credit of all team members, this issue was overcome, as others in the team took on the responsibility to cover for those missing through injury or illness.

It is a credit to everyone in the team just how well they bonded to form such a formidable outfit that would not be denied success. I acknowledge the invaluable contribution of all the runners from Year 8 and Year 9 who made an immense impact on the senior team and we look forward to them continuing in that manner in the future.

Congratulations to the team of Hayden Boffey (10.1), Alexander Rossi (9.6) and Abi Roach (9.6) for their second successive win as a team in the State cross country championships. Both Hayden and Alex were subsequently selected for the WA team.

A big thank you goes to Ms Kathryn Down for her tireless efforts this year. I know she was thrilled to finally secure the trophy after being close on many occasions. Finally, it is hard to imagine there is a better group of supportive parents. Collectively, they help when it was our turn to organise morning tea, assist with fundraising and just being there to cheer on the runners is greatly appreciated. The support and encouragement you offer the team and the running of cross country has assisted in developing the culture of our team.
