Certificate II Business

“Success is the sum of small efforts-day in and day out.”

Robert Collier

The Certificate II Business course promotes an inclusive learning environment in which students can participate in a variety of projects. The course is a comprehensive training package which has a strong emphasis on developing life skills and strategies for industry. A large emphasis is placed on providing students with the chance to become workplace ready before graduating and to progress into a career pathway that complements the student’s skillset.

The Certificate II in Business consists of 13 units of work which can be completed across Years 11 and 12. Each unit competency has several performance criteria which relate to a particular skill or workplace situation in the business industry. Most of the units are practically-based and offer a realistic approach to the workforce which we endeavour to educate through enterprise ideas such as this year’s barista course and our regular cooking classes. On completion, each graduate receives a nationally recognised qualification which students can use to gain entry into a higher learning institution such as TAFE, or graduates have the option to join the workforce with confidence knowing they have workplace experience.

We base a lot of assessments around organisational activities, as this is an important skill in industry. The students found this particularly challenging at the start of the year, as we simulated an environment with strict policies and procedures they would experience in a real workplace.

The Year 11 students created a virtual business which operates under similar guidelines and structures to any small business. This year the Year 11 students created a smoothie stand, ‘Sweet as Smoothies’, which produced healthy smoothies for sale and consumption at lunch times throughout the year. Funds generated from the exercise were put towards additional resources within our program and towards the next India Pilgrimage.

The practical nature of the course provides a supportive educational experience for our students, with a real emphasis on preparing students for life after Trinity College. Each member of the course has demonstrated a professional and mature approach to alternative learning styles, embracing the opportunity to develop teamwork, communication, presentation and organisational skills. We were very pleased to see the Year 12 students receive their certificates and commend the way they approached the course. We thank the students for their hard work, commitment and enthusiasm in which they have approached the qualification. We wish these students all the best for their future.
