Year 7

The transition into Senior School can be a stressful and challenging time for families and students so to assist in this process, the Year 7s were given a handbook titled Codes to the Next Level. This was created to enhance their organisational skills and to encourage the boys to share their concerns with family, staff and peers.

In another effort to keep things straightforward, the cohort was given an objective from the outset to live out a Trademark of being ‘Independent, Organised and Supportive’. Within this, the students were encouraged to strive to be responsible, motivated, prepared, resilient and considerate in their actions.

The Becoming Brothers retreat was held in Week 5 of Term 1. Students experienced the legendary retreat at Camp Kelly in Dwellingup, where they participated in activities aimed at building relationships and fostering a greater sense of belonging. Through activities such as raft-building and hiking, the students were challenged to develop their sense of responsibility and independence in a cooperative and team-building environment. Through the assistance of their Big Brothers (Year 12 Senior Ministers) in attendance, they also learnt and gained an appreciation for the foundations in which the retreat was built. Such a successful and memorable experience does not come without significant work and sacrifice. Thanks to all College staff for supporting the retreat. Special mention is made of Mr Michael Murphy who did a fantastic job coordinating the Senior Ministers and with the help of Adventure Out, Mr Brett Silver and Mr Peter Oliver created an excellent outdoor education and camp experience for all.

It is fantastic to see so many students determined to support those in need and the boys should be very proud for raising more money than any other year group at the College’s Annual Unfair Day. The Christian Service aspect is paramount at the College and in addition to the India Fun Run, the year group’s focus for Semester 2 was making a positive difference to those experiencing hardship. In Term 2, the Year 7s coordinated Indoor Soccer for CanTeen which involved Years 7 and 8 boys involved in a physical activity. Over $1300 was raised and it was fantastic to have representatives from CanTeen attend an assembly to receive the cheque.

Students developed skills in IT, problem-solving and overall study habits as well as critical components related to building positive working relationships and, most importantly, resilience and self-confidence in difficult times. Dedicated students were rewarded for their craft by accepting invitations to be a part of the da Vinci Decathlon and World Scholar’s Cup. Each term, academic outlines were distributed to parents and students and I received great feedback on the many benefits of planning workloads in advance and keeping on top of assignments and tasks.

Trinity has a proud history of exceptional performances within the Cultural Pillar and the Year 7s certainly made an impact in this area. Each term our Year 7 Mass benefitted from the amazing voices of the Middle School Vocal Ensemble members, who also shone during the Middle School Music Night earlier in the year. Dozens of Year 7s contributed to the College winning the Zenith Shield for yet another year.

The boys learnt some valuable lessons in sportsmanship and resilience this year. It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge Benjamin Fels (7.6) and Mitchell McGrath (7.4) who broke College records in being the first Year 7 students to be picked for winter senior sport 1st teams when they were both named in our 1st XI Hockey during the winter sport PSA season. Numerous other boys also represented their State in national competitions and it was fantastic to see the support and accolades these students received from staff and their peers. With the absence of a House system at the College, sporting rivalries are set between PCGs and these were built during the Inter PCG swimming and athletics events during Terms 1 and 3. In extremely hard fought competitions I again congratulate 7.7 and 7.8 on sharing the Swimming Shield and 7.2 on being the overall Athletics Champion.

Special mention is made of the Trinity Fluoro Disco held late in Term 3. It was a fantastic night, full of dancing and happy chatter. Thank you to all parents and College staff who assisted in the smooth organisation of the night.

The dedication and selflessness of the student PCG Council this year, was outstanding. From giving up their lunchtimes for fundraising, to assisting their teachers with daily tasks during PCG, nothing proved too much for this group and I express my gratitude to this fantastic bunch of young men for their consistent support over the year.

Finally, and in speaking of gratitude, all Year 7 students and I, thank the PCG and classroom teachers. They give so much in so many ways and I have certainly appreciated their care, hard work and assistance. I am looking forward to another successful year of overcoming challenges with great personal growth as the group moves through Year 8 in 2017.
