Year 10

At the beginning of the year, the Year 10 cohort was challenged to set personal goals, actively engage in the life of the College and to take on more responsibility as senior students.

They were asked to be mindful of the upcoming subject selection process for 2017, enabling them to reach the prerequisites for their desired courses of study. With a focus on maintaining a positive attitude and application in the classroom, the clear majority of students have excelled in the opportunities that have been presented to them. For others, there is still time to reap the benefits of being an active Trinity College student and participate in cultural activities outside the sporting arena.

In Term 1 Year 10 ‘roadie’ volunteers assisted the Peer Ministers in the Quest retreat. The roadies volunteered their time to direct traffic and unload the bounty of donated canned food. Next year many of these students will form the Peer Minister Group as Year 11 students.

Under a new initiative from the University of Western Australia, the Year 10 students were invited to experience life as a student on campus. The day was designed to engage all students from both ATAR and non-ATAR pathways. Students were exposed to one of three activities: Engineering, Health Science and Business Commerce. Each activity was designed to be hands-on and engaging. It is hoped that by exposing the students to life beyond Trinity this may be a motivating factor to reach their potential. The boys were taken on a quick tour of the campus and enjoyed the brief snapshot of life as a UWA student.

The Pastoral Care Group Councillors were challenged to take on more responsibility and responded by organising several events for students during pastoral care time. One of the most common statements from students at the beginning of the year was that the entire year group should participate as a collective and becoming united. The councillors have worked hard to assist in this process. Our councillors were key drivers for the Pastoral Care Group activities conducted during Tuesday PCG times, such as the sausage sizzle fundraiser in Term 2 and for driving the themed social in Term 3 with Mercedes College.

Other cultural events run throughout the year included the Trinity/Mercedes afternoon and the aforementioned Term

3 Trinity/Mercedes social with the theme Heroes versus Villains. This night exhibited the potential of the year group, with every student attending the social in fancy dress and having a fantastic time in the process. Thank you to the staff for embracing the theme, with guest appearances from Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Cruella De Vil, Ron Weasley and Harley Quinn.

Students have worked hard to complete the Personal Development and Wellbeing Course (PDW). Students were exposed to courses including Study Skills, RAC Keys For Life, mental health and basic manual labour tasks in the real world. Students also participated in the Christian Service program, spending time in the wider community with the elderly and those less fortunate than themselves. It is hoped that with these skills the students will be better equipped for Senior School and the wider world upon completion of their secondary schooling.

Building on the RAC Keys for Life program, the Year 10s attended the RAC bstreetsmart event held at Perth Arena in Term 1. Hailed as one of the most educational and influential events of its kind throughout the world, the students learnt valuable lessons of responsibility and the importance of being a positive influence as a potential passenger in a vehicle. It is hoped that student drivers adopt a mature and positive driving ethos and learn from their experiences of the Keys for Life Program and RAC bstreetsmart event.

In addition to the Mental Health and Wellbeing (PDW) course, students have participated in the Climate Schools Combined Study (CSC) over the past three years. The information gathered from participating schools has helped create the CSC Substance Use and Mental Health Manuals that have been distributed to schools throughout Australia. The study has been a long process involving the University of New South Wales, Curtin University and Queensland University of Technology. Our College currently has access to all resources because of our significant participation in the project.

After 13 and a half years at Trinity, 2016 will be my final year at the College. It has been a blessing to be associated with such a fine cohort of young men. The year group is filled with so many talented individuals in so many different fields: budding NASA astronauts, musicians, public speakers, actors, active Men for Others and sportsmen. It is hard to say goodbye; however, I am more than comfortable in the knowledge that this year group will move on to bigger and better things. I look forward to seeing these young men at their graduation in 2018.

Thank you to the outstanding group of Pastoral Care Group teachers; Mrs Judy Dawson, Mr Paul Presser, Ms Lisa Potgieter, Miss Tess Warner, Mr Dustin Aylmore, Ms Rebekah Harris-Miller, Mr Rohan Van Dongen and Mr Michael Murphy. It has been a privilege to work with such a caring group of professionals. Special mention goes to Mr Chris Morris who was an outstanding acting Head of Year during Term 2. Without the hard work and dedication of our staff the boys would not be able to experience the many opportunities the College has to offer.
