Water Polo has continued to grow in numbers in 2016 and we are so pleased to see many students jumping in the water for a match.

Coming back from our USA water polo tour, the senior boys were keen to get back in the water in early January, with the rest of the teams joining them in February. With a large cohort of Year 7 and Year 10 players, we are looking forward to a number of strong years in the future.

Our 1st VI water polo team, ably captained by Lucas Starkie (12.4), put up some competitive game play this season. The game against Hale School in Round 2 was exhilarating to watch as the lead changed multiple times throughout the game ending in a 10–10 draw. The overall result for the Dickinson Shield was an admirable fifth place for Trinity and we look forward to a great 2017 season.

The Middle School water polo teams are still going strong under the leadership of Old Boy James Valentine (‘15) and ably supported by teachers Miss Tess Warner, Mr Nick Marston, Mr Anthony Murphy and Mr Dion Mepham. The senior teams were coached by Mr Andras Jo-Kovaks (1st VI), Mr Chris Morris (2nd VI), James Valentine (‘15) and Mr Brad Chapman (3rd VI), Mr Glenn Christiansen (4th VI) and Carter Fabling (‘15) and Ms Sonia Scordo and all played some great games showing their skills and talents.

We have had an amazing group of Year 12 water polo players this year, who had admirably played in all levels of the game. Congratulations to Jed Thompson (12.8) who has played 21 1st VI games in his time at Trinity, with Lucas Starkie and Cooper Tatafu (12.3) who have played 18 and 16 games at the highest level. We wish all the boys the best of luck for the future and look forward to seeing you play against us on the TOBA side, in the future.

Lastly, thank you to our parent group, who is always willing to help out when needed. A particular mention needs to go to Mrs Melanie Starkie for her support with the tour, windup and throughout the season. The support of this amazing group of men and women is integral to our success and we look forward to seeing you all at the pool in the future.

USA WATER POLO TOUR

Our 2015/2016 season began with our inaugural water polo tour to California in December. Two teams of keen water polo players competed in two tournaments around Los Angeles as well as learning about US culture through visits to a high school and other tourist destinations. Our first weekend was spent competing in the Ventura County Cup in Thousand Oaks. While the Under 18 team found themselves up against some daunting opposition, our Under 16 team was very competitive in their field. Five games for each team later and we came out of the experience with many new skills and many new friends.

During the week, we attended many tourist destinations: Disneyland, Universal Studios, Rose Bowl Stadium, Santa Monica Pier and a UCLA basketball match, but the most memorable day of the tour was our experiences at Polytechnic High School in Pasadena (Poly). The boys began their day at Poly by going to classes with a buddy. Some students experienced dance and Latin classes while others sat in on a specialist maths course which rivals what Mr Hailes teaches! We then attended a school assembly, where we were given an extremely enthusiastic welcome and a sing-along to Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas is you”. We ended the day with training at the Poly pool and cheered on the girls’ varsity water polo team in their game before heading off to training with the Rose Bowl Water Polo Club who hosted us for the night. Our last weekend was spent competing in the Commerce Invitational which again was a strong competition for our boys to play in. After four more games over the weekend, the boys were ready to come home and bolstered to use their new skills in the 2016 PSA water polo season.

A big thank you to all the parents who supported the team in their fundraising efforts, as well as Mr Chris Morris and Andras Jo-Kovaks for organising and helping supervise the tour.
