Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education at Trinity College once again provided students with fantastic opportunities to develop lifelong skills through a very practical approach. Students were encouraged to be independent, self-reliant and to take responsibility for their own learning.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION YEARS 7–10

All Year 7 students had their first experience of Outdoor Education. Students were involved in practical sessions aimed to develop friendships, organisation, self-esteem and an interest in learning outdoors. Activities included mountain biking, fishing, canoeing and camp-cooking. As this unit is very practical-based the students were involved in plenty of hands-on activities which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Year 8 students continued to select Outdoor Education as one of their elective units in 2016. With four classes across 2016 it is still a very popular choice with Trinity students. The Year 8 course expands on many of the activities introduced in Year 7. These boys were also given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on a one day mountain biking expedition through the John Forrest National Park. Congratulations to all boys who completed the ride.

In 2016 our Year 10 students spent four days at the Explorus Adventure Learning property, based in Karridale, situated in the south west of Western Australia. The boys were able to experience a challenging high ropes course through the tree tops of the Karri Forrest, explore Giants Cave at night and abseil the 37 metre cliffs at Wilyabrup. The expedition was the culmination of a number of theory units based on climbing, navigation, ropes, knots and minimal impact. All boys who attend the camp thoroughly enjoy the experience and I look forward to their involvement in Outdoor Education throughout 2017. Our Year 12 cohort tackled the Munda Biddi Trail for three nights on a mountain bike camp. This challenge required boys to be self-sufficient in terms of navigation, food and equipment. The camp successfully achieved its goal of developing cooperation, confidence and independence for these students.

Congratulations to all students involved in Outdoor Education in 2016. It was a very successful and enjoyable year.

A special thank you is given to all staff involved in these expeditions and their dedication to Trinity’s comprehensive, off-campus commitments.

SENIOR SCHOOL VET COURSES IN OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Year 11 students studying Outdoor Education have been completing a Certificate II in Sport and Recreation, while Year 12 students completed a Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation. These certificates are coordinated by YMCA Australia and are recognised nationwide. Along with the Certificate II, students were able to obtain numerous external qualification such as Senior First Aid, Aquatic Rescue Training and The Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (power boat licence).

Combined experience from Trinity College staff, international instructors from the State Sailing Centre, Royal Life Saving WA trainers and the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, our students are exposed to a high level of training that culminates with a great expedition. The Year 11 students set out on a six day expedition based on the coast of Dampier. Boys were required to navigate a course through the islands of the Dampier Archipelago, as well as enjoy the natural wonders of this fantastic part of Western Australia. While boating from island to island, the boys were given the chance to do some fishing, sailing and snorkeling. I’m sure the boys have very positive memories from this expedition. Hiking
