The Trinity College Volleyball Club continues to enjoy wonderful success both on and off the court as a result of the tremendous support from the volleyball community.
Mr John Overton Volleyball Head Coach
I thank the Volleyball Club committee, family members, students and coaching staff for their wonderful contribution this season. The committee has introduced some marvellous initiatives in the past 12 months to solidify the profile of our sport amongst the PSA competition. These initiatives also aid the players in becoming the best athletes they can and assist in developing the players as young men. The committee’s decision to align with Balcatta Volleyball Club and compete in the Junior Winter League Competition has allowed our players to play more regularly. As a club, we have also had additional support in the form of sponsorship and would like to thank the generous donations received from Uwe’s European Appliance Repairs and Main Street Cellars. Both companies have provided financial support and products to facilitate fundraising initiatives and we are truly grateful.
Our philosophy as a club is to promote inclusion and to coach each team within our club as if they are as important, as the 1st VI team. This mantra stems from focusing on process versus outcome and treating every individual as an investment in the future. To fulfil this statement we must first define success and how we measure success. Defining this term can be complex, multi-faceted and a multi-layered phenomenon that is socially learned and discussed differently amongst people. From an education and coaching perspective it is about behaviours, norms and expectations and to others it can be about shields and medals. As Head Coach I am pleased to acknowledge our players continually focus on behaviour, expectations and norms which facilitates a strong club culture. Our culture is a constant work in progress but through strong leadership and sound methodologies Trinity volleyball has managed to build an environment of which we can be proud.
The outcome of the 2016 volleyball season was a successful one, retaining the Br Carigg Shield is truly satisfying, but what is most pleasing was the process that has led to the achievement. The preparation began in Term 4 2015 with the opportunity to play five of the six PSA competitors and the incentive of travelling to Melbourne to compete in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup, was an ideal platform. The standard of competition our athletes were exposed to during the 2015 AVSC tournament was far superior to any fixture or game our players had previously encountered at PSA level. Our results at this tournament were mixed across the different age groups entered, but the most pleasing aspect was the third place finish of the Year 10 team — it was our first ever medal at this tournament. Our results overall:
Under 15 Division 1 – 17th Under 16 Division 1 – 5th Under 17 Division 1 – 3rd Open Division 2 – 22nd
Pre-season and trials for the 1st VI squad commenced in January, with a large number of players committing to the holiday training sessions. The 1st VI team became stronger with each fixture only losing the one set in the entire season. We were in the position of being able to narrow our focus purely on our final match against Wesley College. The final match was a true ‘winner take all’ grand final, with Wesley being undefeated also. We decided to take two weeks to prepare for our final match and with a diligent approach, our players were able to create a game plan that was good enough to defeat Wesley comprehensively 3–0, to retain the Br Carigg Shield. I commend the playing group for its professional attitude and focus throughout the season. The team was well led by Captain Leon Formato (11.1) and Vice-captain Callum Proud (12.3) who should both be immensely satisfied of what they achieved over the season. I acknowledge Assistant Coach, Mr Bobby Emmanuel, for his contribution on game day and his efforts made towards the Volleyball Club.
Once again our senior 2nd, 3rd and 4th VI volleyball teams enjoyed outstanding seasons. Not only did our 3rd and 4th VI teams experience many victories but the students developed a strong sense of camaraderie and had a really enjoyable season under the guidance of Mr John Ricciardi and Mr Mitchell Bristow-Stagg (’15). The 2nd VI team had an outstanding season and are congratulated for winning every match, bar one to Aquinas College. Mr Peter Fitzgerald (’13) and Mr Tim Hince did a marvellous job coaching the 2nd teams and ensured the players were well prepared and played in a manner that would make the transition from the 2nds to the 1st team much easier.
The Year 10 volleyball program continued to make valuable progress under the tutorage of Mr Sam Mettam (’10) and Mrs Rosa West. Their philosophy of process versus outcome was essential, as the emphasis was on preparation for their senior years. With this in mind the players experienced mixed results; however, significant steps were put in place for this year group to be competitive in years to come. The talent in the 10A team was diluted with Daniel Fitzgerald (10.2) playing every game in the 1st VI team which allowed opportunities for other players to play different roles and up-skill in readiness for the next level.
Our Year 7s were lucky enough to be under the direction of Ms Claudia Kelly. One of the keys to success for our senior teams is the integral development that occurs in their foundation years. The students work to achieve a greater understanding of the sport and acquire the skills necessary for a faster and more complex style of play. The Middle School program was managed by Mr Bobby Emmanuel and included Mr Matthew Murphy (’14), Mr Julian Fritz and Ms Rita Basilio. All teams proved to be too strong on a weekly basis for their opponents and had convincing wins whilst maintaining a professional and sportsmanlike attitude. Unfortunately, other PSA schools were unable to provide the same amount of teams we have available for Years 7–9. This often leaves Trinity doing specialist training sessions or beach volleyball tournaments to cater for the uneven number of teams across the PSA.
I congratulate Tylen Keizer (10.3), Daniel Fitzgerald and Nichollas Montero (11.4) who were selected to attend the Australian Junior Volleyball Camp in December of 2015. I also congratulate Aidan Correa (11.5) and Daniel Fitzgerald for being selected in the Under 16 State team and Leon Formato, Nichollas Montero and Callum Proud for their selection and outstanding performance in the Under 17 State volleyball team. I am very impressed by the larger number of students who have decided to advance their volleyball development in the Western Australian Volleyball League.
The 2016 season has been an overwhelming success due to the efforts of all involved within the Volleyball Club. We are very grateful to have so many generous people in our community. The progression seen in the past five years has been tremendous and is sure to be an outstanding platform for sustained success in the future.
