The 2016 athletics season commenced on Monday 15 August with a full squad training session, an introduction of new coaches, with expectations reinforced and team goals set.
Mr Brett Silver Head of Athletics
This session marked the beginning of the physically and mentally demanding training block in preparation for the PSA Athletics Carnival to be held at AK Reserve on Friday 9 September.
The athletics season is conducted over a four week period in which coaches prepare large numbers of athletes with three or four timetabled training sessions a week. The coaches involved, are a combination of Trinity staff, parents and external individuals with experienced athletics backgrounds. Thank you to all staff involved in the 2016 season. It was definitely not through a lack of effort or support from any aspect of Trinity athletics that Scotch College was able to win the Alcock Shield on the day.
Thank you to all parents of our athletes for their support during such a short, yet intense season. Your assistance at Saturday morning trainings as well as supplying morning tea was greatly appreciated.
A special mention is directed to our outstanding ground staff. Their time and effort prior to and during the season, to ensure the athletics track was marked, discus and shot put rings were available and long jump pit was accessible, were invaluable and very much appreciated by all coaches and athletes.
As per previous years, the 2016 Inter-school Athletics Carnival met all expectations of a day full of energy, excitement and fierce competition. Along with a number of outstanding performances and hard work there were, unfortunately, some disappointed coaches and students who did not perform to the level they had hoped for. All Trinity athletes can hold their heads high as they conducted themselves in a very professional manner. They were humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Thank you to all athletes for your attitude and dedication to our goal on that special Friday in September.
For some of our Year 7 students, this intense four week training block was a shock to them, while others thrived on the experience. These boys were physically and mentally tested through some gruelling training sessions and given the large number of Year 7 boys involved, they must have been enjoying it. Congratulations to all the under 13 athletes from Trinity — I hope you return next year for another season.
The under 14 age division did very well and recognition is given to Jojo Parise (8.5), who was a clear standout. Not only was he the highest under 14 points scorer for Trinity, he was also the overall champion in the under 14 age division. performances on the track it was clear his determination and hard work at training was worthwhile. He completed the day with two new PSA records in the 400 metre and 800 metre events. Alexander was well-supported in the age group by Eric Bonney (8.5), who was fifth overall, and Semisi Amato (9.5) who missed out on a top ten overall finish by one point. Well done to all athletes in the under 15 division who competed at the PSA Inter-school.
The under 16 age group had a very successful inter-school day, thanks to a number of phenomenal performances by Thomas Throssell (10.4). Thomas competed in six events and was not only the individual PSA champion for the under 16 age group, he also scored the highest amount of points across all age groups. Throughout the day he claimed three new PSA records in the 100 metre hurdles, 200 metre and 400 metre events.
The Trinity under 17 age group is full of dedicated individuals who thoroughly enjoy representing their College. Brandon Starcevich (11.1) was the outstanding athlete in this age group finishing fifth overall.
William McDonald (12.5) scored 69 points and was not only the highest-scoring Trinity athlete in the open division but was also the individual champion for the age group. His competitive nature allowed him to be successfully selected to compete in five events on the day. He was supported by a number of athletes including Trinity athletics Captain, Tamba Lebbie (12.3), who finished second overall and Callum Lovegrove (12.8) who was Trinity’s third highest points scorer in the open age group.
Congratulations to Tamba for his leadership and dedication to the athletics program. With the support of an outstanding group of vice-captains, this year’s athletics team was a pleasure to be part of.
Thank you to all members of the open age division for your contribution over the past seasons. An invitation to return next year and assist, is always there for you.
When reflecting on the 2016 Trinity athletics team, their overall performance can be described as very satisfying. Although they didn’t win the Alcock Shield, they worked extremely hard towards a common goal and some friendships across different year groups were formed. Trinity closed the gap from 330 points in 2015 to a mere 100 points from eventual winners Scotch College. Something big is certainly building for Trinity athletics and it will not be long until the shield is back at the College.
Alexander Rossi (9.6) led the Trinity under 15 age group and finished fourth overall in this division. With outstanding
