Guys In Groove (GIG) They can break, they can glide and they can moonwalk. They have passion, they have strength and they are determined.

Whilst the former can be taught, the latter form a group of characteristics common to all members of the GIG family; and yes they are a family. The members of this year’s high school dance crew worked tirelessly every week and never failed in their pursuit of excellence. The number of boys turning up for this year’s auditions proved how popular modern forms of dance have become in our society. Some showed their own talents for breaking, while others were keen to branch out into the genre of hip-hop that would form the foundation of the year’s choreography. As 27 boys were successfully selected into the group, the hard work began to find a way to incorporate so many different styles into one routine. Led by their Dance Captain, Alexander Drewett (12.4), and Vice Captain, Martin Pham (12.3), work commenced on a ‘flash mob’ for the Library’s gothic display in Term 2. This performance was successful in ‘scaring the pants’ off unsuspecting library-goers as the boys donned zombie masks and managed to bring more volume than the library has possibly ever seen. In Week 2 Term 3 the Dance Drama Showcase exhibited, and the GIG members performed their routine The Outsiders. The audience was impressed with the boys’ energy and coordination as a team, and presentations were awarded to Luke Dyson (8.1) (Choreographers Award) and Jordan Bagshaw (10.6) (Most Valuable Dancer).
The same routine was then performed at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre for the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival, to a much larger audience. The applause and screams the boys received at the end of their routine were testament to the quality of dancing they demonstrated. The year ended with the boys performing a newer version of The Outsiders for Presentation Night. Jordan Bagshaw (10.6) and Giordano Ronzan (10.3) stepped in to lead preparations for some newer, more challenging choreography. The bar was raised and, I am very proud to say, the boys stepped up and once again amazed the audience at the Perth Concert Hall, this time made up of the Trinity community. Special thanks must go to Lisa Laurino, who has been an indispensible supporter of the Dance program this year, along with Robert Braham. I also sincerely thank Philippa Dyson and Josephine Drewett who gave up their time to help with costuming and back stage preparations for performances. This year has proven the demand for dance is strong, and I can’t wait to see what skills next year’s crew can bring. Auditions are held in Week 2 of Term 1 so be ready!
