Water Polo
Ms Susie Edwards 1st VII Water Polo Manager
The Trinity water polo club has emerged as a force to be reckoned with this season. Coming from the 2012 season where the 1st VII water polo team did not win a game, they have emerged as the undefeated champions of 2013. All teams within the College have played well, showing great skill, communication and sportsmanship in the pool.
The 2nd VII team, ably coached by Old Boy Mitchell Zekulich (‘10) and managed by Mr Jim Shackleton played some amazing water polo this season. With some good wins and close finishes this is sure to be a team to watch in the future. The 3rd VII coached by Mr Richard Trend (‘69) also showed a high skill level and was successful in many of their games.
The Middle School and Junior School teams have also shown strength and determination in the pool with many successes and hard-fought challenges. A big thank you to the coaches: Simon Brown (Middle A), Hugh Pilgrim (Middle B and C), Mr Dion Mepham (Year 7), Mr Luke Thompson (Junior School), and the Middle School managers, Mrs Judy Dawson and Mr Martin Guest, who work so hard to support the Trinity water polo community.
The wind up was preceded by a parents versus students water polo game. Unfortunately for our young men, the parents thrashed the boys, with some amazing plays by parents Mr Karl Perry, Mr Tony Rigoll and Mr Shane Bogunovich. Centenary Park was a lovely setting for our barbecue which celebrated a great season with the water polo community and many boys were acknowledged on the day for their contributions.
Thank you to all the water polo parents who have been a great help throughout the season. Carol Watson in the canteen has been a great help in providing breakfast for the boys, which has been greatly appreciated. Lastly, a big thank you goes to Mrs Liz Perry who is in charge of the water polo parent group. She is always enthusiastic and energetic and helped the boys and me immensely this year.
Overall, 2013 has been a fantastic year for water polo. I cannot wait to see what the future brings and I look forward to an amazing 2014 water polo season.

1st VII Water Polo
The 2013 1st VII water polo team was an impressive sight this year. They fought a courageous battle against many competitive teams to come away undefeated in the Dickinson Shield competition. The boys knew that they had the skills, fitness and teamwork needed to succeed in their goal and their persistence and hard work definitely paid off in some amazingly played water polo.
New coach, Mr Andras Jo-Kovaks, put the boys through their paces from the beginning of the season, increasing their training schedule and including many holiday sessions. The boys knew that they had an opportunity to win this year and put their hearts and souls into training, and were often seen asking to continue after the allotted time was up. The 1st squad consisted of Years 9–12 boys and all worked hard to achieve their goal.
Some of the most memorable moments within the 1st water polo fixtures were: Thomas Rigoll (11.1) making the winning shot in the last 30 seconds of the game against Christ Church Grammar School; Alexander Bogunovich (11.3) putting a bullet into the bottom right corner, rattling the inside of the post and winning the game against Hale School; and the final quarter of the premiership-deciding game against Aquinas College, where the Trinity team surged ahead to take the shield.
Congratulations to Nicholas Brown (12.5), Matthew Evans (12.3), Noah Harris (12.2), Finlay Koenig-Luck (12.2), Liam Pardini (12.4), Peter Perry (12.7) and Joshua Zekulich (12.5) for being the Year 12 members of the victorious 1st VII water polo team of 2013. In particular, I congratulate Josh and Finlay who have been members of every Trinity 1st water polo game from Years 10–12. The Year 12 cohort of 2013 has been a fantastic supporter of water polo over the years and I wish them well in their future endeavours. I hope you all continue to be involved in water polo as you move away from Trinity.
National Schools Water Polo Championships
Congratulations to Alexander Bogunovich (11.3) and Joshua Zekulich (12.5) for being members of the winning 2013 Schoolboys Water Polo Championships Team. The team was coached by Old Boy Antony Matkovich (‘94), a former Olympic swimmer and national water polo player. The boys played some amazing water polo to be undefeated and win the championship. Both boys have been selected in the national schoolboys team to compete in an international tournament in December 2013.
