Roll Call

The winter season was a hard-fought affair with significant improvements in our football and rugby programs where, for much of the season, we were in contention to figure prominently in the Alcock and Redmond Cups but Scotch College and Hale School beat us in both rounds in football. Again, Hale School was the dominant rugby school but the 1st XV boys showed great character to finish third. Once again, the cross country boys had a good year to finish in second place behind a strong Aquinas College outfit who went through the season without a loss. The 1st XI soccer team had an inconsistent season with victories against both the eventual winners and runners up in the Lawe Davies Cup but did not convert opportunities in other games. The 1st XI hockey team had a mixed season with some excellent performances mixed with games where a failure to capitalise on opportunities led to a loss or a draw. A 6-2 win over Hale in our final home game of the season was a great way for the Year 12s to finish their PSA careers. The badminton team had two good wins during the season but there remains a gap between where we are and where we need to be if we are to mount a challenge to the top badminton schools.

The athletics season was a real challenge with a particularly wet August and September turning Mann Oval into a quagmire, making effective training practically impossible on some afternoons. The reduction in the size of Mann Oval because of the construction of Braithwaite Street between Trinity and the WACA ground has also had an impact on our ability to train as we would like, especially affecting the middle distance athletes. The boys were brave in their efforts over the season and on Inters day and we finished a creditable third, scoring 144 points more than in 2012 – a significant improvement of over 10%.

Initial planning for a new double gymnasium to replace the Foley Centre, which will be converted to a learning area, started late in Term 3, hopefully, with the project to be completed by 2016. The new gym will be larger, more modern and able to cater for the increased demand for facilities both at a PSA sport level and within the physical education program at the College – an exciting prospect.

I would like to thank several groups of people who have contributed strongly to the sport program at Trinity this year:

• the Trinity staff who give up so much time to coach the boys each week • the parent body without whom we would really struggle to meet the many and varied demands of the sport program • the ground staff who work tirelessly to provide quality facilities for the boys • the College administration for their support of the coaches and the boys • the Trinity boys, especially our departing Year 12s, who represent their College with pride and such enthusiasm each week.
