Mrs Leanne Wilson Rugby Manager
The 2013 Rugby season has proved to be both exciting and encouraging.
This year we were fortunate enough to secure the services of Dean Carlisle as our 1st XV coach. His style was vastly different from our previous coach and the boys certainly have been in for a lot more fitness work.
We started the season with a tour to the Gold Coast where the boys did some heavy training, watched some super 15 Rugby and played three games, two of which they won. I would like to thank Mr Richard Trend for organising this tour and Mr Dean Carlisle, Mr Tony Webb and Mr Ian Hailes for taking the boys. Not only did the boys have a wonderful time, but came back a closer unit, ready to play.
This year the commitment and desire to win in the senior teams, especially the 1st XV, has been markedly different, which has in turn meant that our results have vastly improved. The 1st XV has been a force to reckon with. The 1st XV Captain, Noah Harris (12.2) and Vice-Captain Finlay Koenig-Luck (12.2) have been outstanding leaders and have been ably supported by the whole Year 12 playing group. They look out for each other and truly play as a team. They have also supported the younger teams which helps make Rugby a Club.
Although the 2nd XV and Year 10 teams have also worked very hard, a lack of numbers has continued to be a set-back. Week in and week out they play against teams with a multitude of fresh reserves, when they battle at times with not even a full team. You have to admire their never say die attitude.
This year in the Junior School and Years 7, 8 and 9 we have been very strong. We have large numbers and a really good feel amongst the boys which augers well for the future of Rugby at Trinity College.
I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all the coaches. The Trinity College staff, Mr Tony Webb, Mr Ian Hailes, Mr Martin Guest, Mr Tim Shannassy, Mr Joseph Tamigi are all hardworking and enthusiastic in the way they encourage and motivate the boys, along with Mrs Bindy Hammond who manages the “Magic” team. They lead by example which ensures our boys always play the game in the spirit in which the game should be played. A lot of the success this year can also be attributed to the multitude of “Old Boys” who turn up every week to help coach, run lines and generally support the rugby club. Their willingness to be involved is a credit to themselves and is an example of the “TC Spirit” that the other PSA schools envy.
I would like to thank the large group of enthusiastic and committed parents who amaze me with how hard they work and how dedicated they are. Whether they are handing out snakes and drinks, cooking sausages for sausage sizzles, taking photos, organising fundraising, running lines or washing jumpers, they are always there. The boys are so lucky to have such highly involved parents who live out the school mantra “Men for Others” on a daily basis. Trinity College rugby can only keep moving forward with this type of dedication.
Lastly I would like to congratulate all the boys who have represented Trinity College in Rugby this season. The way you have played the game with determination and pride shows how strong the commitment is across the entire club.
