Mr Christopher Allanson (’91) 1st XVIII Manager

The 2013 season was not the premiership winning season we would have hoped for, but was successful both on and off the field nonetheless. The season kicked off in earnest with 40 senior boys heading to Melbourne to play against Caulfield Grammar School, watch the Anzac Day game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, visit various clubs and take in the culture of Australia’s AFL capital. Highlights included attending the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance and catching up with a number of Trinity Old Boys who are playing at Melbourne-based AFL clubs, in particular Travis Colyer (‘08), Alexander Fasolo (‘09), Reece Conca (‘09) and Kane Lucas (‘08).

The quest for the Alcock Cup began with a victory over Wesley College and was followed up by one of the best first quarters of football played by a school boy side with Trinity kicking seven goals to zero against Aquinas College on their home ground. The competition appeared to be a battle between Trinity, Aquinas, Hale School and Scotch College with results against the latter two schools being the better of the results in our games this year. Despite finishing third, I hope that all boys who played for the colours this year enjoyed themselves and were proud to pull on the jumper.

Congratulations must go to Captain, Shayne Hille (12.4), and Vice Captain, William Colreavy (12.3), who led the team admirably. Their commitment to football at the College over the past five years has been of the highest standard. To all other Year 12 footballers, I hope that you have enjoyed your time playing for Trinity at whatever level you were selected. I encourage you to continue to play this great game if not at a higher representative level, then in the amateurs where you will be most welcome down at Trinity Aquinas Football Club in Como. In terms of coaching this year, the College has been blessed with an abundance of committed and enthusiastic coaches at all levels. Without doubt, the return of John Montagu (’74) to the role of 1st XVIII coach provided new ideas and a renewed passion for success from the most successful coach the College has had. He was ably backed by Peter Oliver and Ben Russell, but it was the addition of two times West Coast Eagles premiership player, Michael Brennan, that was a major coup for the program. Michael brought with him a calmness and insight that genuinely added to the efficiency of how the boys prepared themselves, particularly on game day. In a calm and measured way, Michael would offer advice from a different point of view which gave the coaching staff more possibilities for how players were used on the field. We hope to see Michael continue on in this role in 2014. I would also like to thank Jacob Brennan and Fraser McInnes from the West Coast Eagles who have also helped give specialist instruction to players in the 1st XVIII squad at various times. It has been outstanding to see the work of recent Old Boys Marcus Ruggerio (‘11) and Daniel Arangio (‘11) with the 8As and 9As respectively. Our younger players have enjoyed having the expertise of these two young WAFL footballers teaching them the game. At Year 7 level, Peter Oliver has stated on numerous occasions what a pleasure it has been to work with a wonderful group of students, but also how lucky he was to have the support of great parents at each game. Peter’s instruction is also an important link between what the boys learn in their first year as well as what is expected in Years 11 and 12 with his work with the 1st XVIII. Andrew Jenkin also joined the coaching group this year and has brought a wealth of knowledge to the very important development group that is the Year 10s.

As in any club, the focus can often be on the top side; however, a club is only ever as strong as the glue that holds it together and this is formed from those students who play in the lower grades whether it is an A, B or C team. The future of the club seems very bright with the 7A and 8A teams going through the season undefeated and the 10As winning their title with only one lost game for the year. Across the grades this season, Trinity won over 80% of matches contested. Once you run out across the white line, as long as you wear the Trinity colours, you give your all for the club regardless of the team you are selected in.

I thank all the coaches who have been invaluable in providing opportunities and guidance in these teams week-in-week-out. To Simon Harvey, Boston Williamson (’09), Anthony Byrne, Ross Jacobs, Trent Bradshaw (’11), Michael Murphy (’70), Judy Dawson, Emily Springate, Mary Hickey, Paul Van Vliet, Dion Mepham and Ben McDonald: your efforts have been most appreciated by the boys you have worked with this year. Finally, I would like to thank a small group of parents who have helped to drive the Friends of Football committee this year. To Paul Colreavy, your generosity with all fundraising ventures and your time and effort in keeping the Thursday afternoon sausage sizzle tradition alive has been greatly appreciated by the senior boys (not just from within the football community). A big thankyou also to David Tomasi who has kept a check on the club’s finances and to Janet Flematti who is always willing to help ‘get things done’ when required, such as setting up for the presentation night.

I am already looking forward to kicking off the season for 2014.
