Mr Philip Jurjevich (’85) Head of Rowing
The 2013 Rowing season was a smashing success! Both as individuals and as a club, the wins were enormous. Our biggest win was in the leadership shown by every boy. A commitment from all in the club to develop, promote and enact team goals was something great to be a part of. It culminated in Trinity winning the 1st VIII Challenge Cup, in what will go down in history as a magnificent race. As well as finishing a close 2nd, three points, to worthy winners Guildford Grammar in the Hamer Cup.
Some of the goals set early in the season where:-
• Everyone is a leader • Fighting for a win from every situation • Never letting anyone pass us • Being indefatigable • Pushing our boundaries • Eating up everything thrown at us and impressing ourselves – “the win is within” • Every member of the club (the school) counts • The unseen gesture. Character is what you do when no one is watching • Machine-like intensity
These goals were not new, but the senior students suggested creating a poster, a visual reminder of their commitment to make these goals our standard.
When the Water Polo played off for the Dickerson Shield, the rowers asked if they could finish training in time to lead the cheer squad, they did the same for the Swimming, Volleyball and Basketball.
Wins by the 1st VIII, 3rd VIII, 4th VIII and a 5th VIII that on two occasions won the 4th VIII race, capped off a season of enormous success. Under the guidance of Mr Antonio Maurogiovanni, seven times Olympian and Nicolo’s father, Nicolo managed illness and the National competition to still represent the College in the winning 1st VIII and win our Best VIII Oarsman Award and the George Xouris Cup for Sculling through the season. Post season, Jex Fatin (12.6), Luke Hutcheson (12.2), Jordan Ziliotto (12.4), Lachlan Hadwen (12.5), David Colton (12.7) and Coach Mr Paul Bolton are all congratulated on being selected in the Pathway 8 that represented WA in Sydney and finished 2 seconds off becoming the Junior VIII Australian representatives.
The 2013 Ergometer Champions were; Jex Fatin ‘Open’, Samuel Barclay (11.5), Gianluca Lenzarini (10.3) and Brennan Edwards (9.6). Sculling Champions were Nicolo Maurogiovanni (12.1) ‘Open’, Samuel Watson (11.4), Luke Ameduri (10.3) and Brennan Edwards (9.6). The Captain of Boats, Luke Hutcheson (12.2), Vice Captains Angus Gillespie (12.3) and Jex Fatin (12.6) and Captain of Coxswains David Colton (12.7) were all selfless leaders and lived the message they were trying to pass on to younger year groups. Stephen Murphy (11.3) won the Best Senior Clubman, Conlon Boros (10.6) won Best Clubman and James Lynch (11.1) was the Most Improved Oarsman. 2013 was also the first trial of having year group captains. Rohan James (9.7) and Nicholas Gillespie (10.6) are congratulated for their appointment to these positions.
The Old Boys continued to shine at the National and International level, with Rhys Grant (’04) winning the Heavyweight Scull Presidents Cup, Alex Murphy (’09) winning the Under 23 Lightweight Scull and Jack Cleary (’12) winning the Junior Scull and being selected in the Australian Junior team making the final in Lithuania. All three athletes were coached by Jamie Hewlett (’04). This follows on from Ben Cureton (’98) competing in the 2012 London Olympics as the favourite and defending World Champion in the Lightweight Four. Brendan Murray (’07) competed in the Australian Men’s 8 and Josh Hicks (’08) and David Watts (’09) also represented Australia in the last year.
The parents were again our strength adding an amazingly passionate and capable group but also letting their children know they are involved and that the endeavour is important.
For the rest of their lives, when David Colton. Nicolo Maurogiovanni, Luke Salerno, John Carbone, Jex Fatin, Luke Hutcheson, Lachlan Hadwen, Joseph Caspersz-Loney and Jordan Ziliotto look at the Swan River (or any river, or any boat) they will remember a great day. One celebrated with their school mates, past and present. They enacted the plan to perfection, not just the plan for on the water, but the plan to be the team member they would be impressed to remember. The one that young rowers could aim to be like – and they were. Well done.

Vale John (Jack) Messer
In December Trinity College was saddened to hear about the passing of John (Jack) Messer, one of the mighty men who have contributed so much to the rich history of Rowing at Trinity College.
Trinity was privileged when Jack accepted an invitation to be guest speaker at our Golden Jubilee Rowing Assembly in 2012. Marching with the official party led by the Trinity Pipes and Drums, speaking inspirationally to assembled students, visiting the Jack Messer Rowing Shed named in his honour and catching up with Trinity staff, made this day special in so many ways.
Jack’s contribution to Trinity Rowing is magnificently recounted in the book Strive Manfully, written by Mr Tony Curtis:
As soon as Trinity joined the PSA, a rowing program had to be established. As a day school, Trinity did not have the advantage of boarding school facilities to provide breakfast for the rowers after their early morning training sessions. It did, however, have the advantage of its location close to the Swan River which provided easy access to the water. A simple boathouse was designed and erected with John (Jack) Messer, a parent and engineer, fabricating the steel structure and boat racks. Jack and Leonie Messer’s five sons – Peter, Michael, Paul, Jonathan and Damian – and two grandsons Simon (son of Peter) and Nathan (son of Michael) attended Trinity.
A former King’s Cup oarsman, Jack Messer was appointed as Trinity’s first rowing coach and remained in that capacity for more than twenty years – all in a completely honorary capacity. In the years after he finished coaching at Trinity, Jack and his wife were regular visitors to Trinity and enjoyed seeing the growth of the Trinity Rowing Club. The subsequent dedication of the Rowing Shed to Jack Messer was a fitting recognition of his many years of service to rowing at Trinity. (Strive Manfully p.169-170)
With great respect, Rowing staff members and students attended Jack’s funeral held at Castledare on Thursday 12 December 2013. Importantly John’s final request was to be cremated and his ashes to be scattered on the Swan River outside the Trinity Boatshed, which as we know is named for him and his outstanding loyal service to God and our College. We thank Jack and his family for their contribution to Trinity, as the legacy of Jack Messer lives on.
