In 2013 The College had another successful season with the majority of our teams performing very competitively every week across all age and ability levels. The level of participation by the boys remains very high and over the year we fielded 75 different teams in our summer sport program and 53 teams in winter. In addition, we had over 120 boys represent the College in each of our whole school events – swimming, rowing and athletics.

In Term 1, our summer teams had great success and, leading into the final two weeks of the season, we were in contention to win five of the available eight trophies: the Challenge Cup for 1st VIII rowing, the Hamer Cup for rowing, the Blackwood Cup for basketball, the Brother Carrigg Shield for volleyball and, for the first time ever, the Dickinson Shield for water polo. History will show that we won the Challenge Cup and the Dickinson Shield and shared the Brother Carrigg Shield in a three-way tie with Aquinas College and Wesley College. The highlight of the summer was the performance of the water polo team which went from not winning a game in 2012 to being undefeated in 2013. The team showed great resilience under pressure on many occasions: no more so than in the final two games which resulted in wins by a single goal against Hale School and then in what was essentially a grand final against Aquinas College. The basketball boys finished second after losing their final two games and the rowers were magnificent in their efforts but just failed to retain the Hamer Cup by a margin of only three points. After many years languishing at the lower end of the tennis ladder, the 1st VIII boys had their best season for a long time and finished in third place behind very good teams from Christ Church Grammar School and Scotch College.

The last few games of the season produced a surge in the level of the famed TC Spirit as the excitement and possibilities of great outcomes spurred the boys on. We can all be proud of the appropriate level of cheering, singing and celebration of success – loud, positive but appropriate. The conduct of our players and supporters both in defeat and victory was commendable.
