Mr Mark Dodd Team manager
This year Trinity badminton edged closer to many of our rivals with the results of many games being decided by the final doubles pairing. We also had our first ever 9-0 victory against Guildford Grammar School. This result was pleasing for many different reasons, it showed how the 1st VI has strength throughout the entire team as well as the ability to play as individuals or part of a doubles pairing.
Even though we only won two games this season, there was always a high expectation before each game and a fantastic commitment and attitude towards every training session.
There were some outstanding performances from many players; however, a special mention goes to Yiming Dong (10.5) who won our first game against Wesley College (a feat that has not been accomplished in five years) and also to Nicholas Butler (11.2) who continued to win game after game.
A big thank you to Captain Adrian Marsegaglia (12.6) for his fantastic leadership and excellent form over two seasons; to Nicholas Farsalas (12.1) for his role as Vice Captain and being a great role model for the upcoming players in our second team and to Matthew Hadfield (12.2), Peter Perry (12.7) and Adam Nguyen (12.7) for giving their all in every game.
Well done to our 2nds, who have shown real promise this season with fantastic performances throughout the squad.
Congratulations, also, to the 3rds and 4th squads who constantly kept pressure on throughout the season with an eye on moving up the ladder.
A special thanks goes to our amazing coaches, Ailing Zhang (1st and 2nd teams) and Adam Gage (3rd and 4th teams). I would also like to thank all our supportive parents for the wonderful morning teas that they prepared for each home game.

Mr Andrew Osnain Head of Basketball 1st V Basketball Coach
Trinity basketball has yet again experienced growth and success both on and off the court over the summer season 2012-2013. As a leader in PSA basketball, Trinity continues to achieve the results throughout the year groups that reflect the skill and endeavour of the students and the hard work of coaches. The Middle School basketball teams performed exceptionally well and continue to provide the springboard for success within the senior basketball program. It should also be noted that three Year 9 students worked hard to earn a position in the 1st V squad in Term 4 2012. The Year 10 teams continued to develop, with notable improvements in results from the previous year. Finally the 3rd V and 2nd V teams demonstrated a level of basketball that reflects a well-rounded knowledge of the game and an ability to play basketball at the next level. With these performances in mind, Trinity is assured of success for years to come.
The 1st V season began in earnest during the Term 3 holidays of 2012. The boys were well aware that a successful launch of the Blackwood Cup required significant improvement in a number of key performance areas and the boys were enthusiastic about reaching those goals. Term 4 results reflected a distinct possibility that this was achievable, with significant victories over each PSA school.
The level of self-belief and discipline each player demonstrated throughout Term 4 suggested a successful Blackwood Cup was on the cards. Unfortunately this was not to be. Heading into the last two fixtures of the Term 1 season, Trinity had to win at least one of the two games to secure a hand on the Blackwood Cup. Unfortunately after a narrow defeat to Hale School in overtime, it was left to the Aquinas College fixture. The boys began the game with confidence and intensity; however, were unable to sustain this over two halves. The Blackwood Cup slipped through the fingers of the mighty TC. With a taste of what could have been and a renewed attitude on and off the court, the returning and new 1st V squad members, eager for success, are sure to make a bold assault on the Blackwood Cup in 2014.

The most encouraging aspect of Trinity basketball is the enthusiasm of the families who have helped raise the profile of the sport at the College and in the community. Trinity held its annual basketball presentation/pizza evening on Centenary Park, which was well-attended and enjoyed by the Trinity basketball community. With an increased volume of parental support the students are the direct benefactors and your continued support is much appreciated.
Congratulations to all players and supporters on a successful season, with special thanks to Mr Brett Silver for coaching the 2nd V in Term 4 and assisting with the coaching of the 1st V squad; Mr Peter Oliver for his assistance in preparing the 1st V squad with an intensive program for the 10A boys and Mr Russell Hinks for his assistance with the 2nd V and 1st V in Term 4 of 2012. I also acknowledge all Trinity basketball coaches, including an influx of Trinity Old Boys, for their hard work and dedication throughout the season. Thank you for your efforts, experience and enthusiasm in making the season an enjoyable one for the students.
The Trinity basketball community congratulates all Trinity Old Boys who are currently plying their craft for various State Basketball League (SBL) and representative teams at present, some of whom returned to assist with the Trinity basketball program. It was heartening to see a significant number of former Trinity 1st V players return for the inaugural Joel Wagner TOBA fixture between past players and the current 1st V squad. In particular, we recognise the efforts of Trian Iliadis (’06) on his Perth Wildcats debut, along with Nikolas Iliadis (‘11) both currently training with the Perth Wildcats; Jacob Reed (‘07) who has graduated from Nova Southeastern College, Florida and is currently playing for the Willetton Tigers Men’s SBL side; Thomas (Jake) Cannell (‘11), a member of the WA Men’s U/21 squad; Jake Withers (‘09) for his emerging play with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and finally the consistently strong performances of Joel Wagner (‘04) and Jarrad Prior (‘04) in the SBL for the Perth Redbacks.
On a final note, Trinity had the pleasure of hosting China in the Australia versus China basketball series. The men’s team ran through their training session with some keen Trinity basketball members staying late into the night to witness how an international team prepares for a fixture. The subsequent interaction with the team was a memorable experience and something that can only help Trinity basketball improve.
