Trinity College Master Plan The Next Chapter Begins
During 2012 the Trinity College community celebrated 50 years on our East Perth campus and taking this as a timely reminder that some of our core infrastructure is now 50 years old, the Trinity College Board devised a Master Plan to comprehensively address the development of Trinity College over the next 25 years.
Parry & Rosenthal Architects were engaged to assist and over more than a year and numerous meetings with various members of the Trinity College community, a range of long-term factors were considered.

Whilst it is not possible to accurately pinpoint where education will be in 25 years, we need to ensure that our learning spaces are flexible and adaptable. For example, the Junior School needs to include a multipurpose ‘wet’ area for science and similar activities, and we need to develop learning environments that facilitate both individual and collaborative study. This will be particularly relevant when, as a result of a change to the starting school age, the age of leaving students will rise to 18 years with the attendant needs of older students.
The Evolving Nature of Technology
The evolution of technology in delivering education will continue to impact upon the size and shape of school facilities in the future. As a school with a 1-1 laptop program we need to decide whether this is the best way to continue access to technology for our students. For example, would a BYOD (bring your own device) in the upper years be a better preparation for tertiary study? This question is just one of many that our Technology Committee is considering in our endeavour to plan new facilities with the best possible access to technology for our students.

Facilitating the Trinity Community
Trinity College has always prided itself on a belief in the value of community. One of our great concerns is with providing an indoor space large enough to seat 1500 people, thus allowing the Trinity community to gather together for Masses and assemblies whilst providing greater opportunities for indoor sports for our students. Another community concern is providing more parking for staff, parents and visitors.
Impact of External Development
There is substantial development underway on our east and west boundaries and the new Burswood stadium and hotel development footbridge will land on our northern boundary. A significant rise in the surrounding general population is forecast and this will not only increase pedestrian and vehicular traffic directly surrounding the campus with the attendant impact on security, but also impact potential student demographics.
Revenue Raising
It is of great importance to the Trinity College Board that the Trinity student community remains representative of a broad cross-section of the WA community, as this delivers significant educational benefits to all students and maintains the tradition of Edmund Rice. To this end, the Master Plan also addresses the concept of a commercial precinct as a potential future source of revenue to subsidise students whose families would not otherwise be able to send their sons to Trinity. Over the past few years negotiations were undertaken for the development of the new road to our west (Braithwaite Street), the acquisition of land to our north and the opportunity for a small commercial precinct in our southwest corner, where significant commercial development on the other side of this future major intersection is occurring.
Ageing Infrastructure
We need to plan for the replacement of the original buildings. The ongoing maintenance costs of these buildings is rising sharply, with some elements now becoming difficult to repair. A Block, B Block, Br Kelly Senior Block and Gibney Hall all need to be replaced due to concrete cancer identified in each. It then follows that we need to ensure that a large space is available for exams and other events if Gibney Hall is replaced by a performing arts facility with fixed seating. We also need to move the rowing facility from the teaching envelope space to the edge of the campus property and give consideration to more outside playing courts.




Proposed Stages of Building & Development
Whilst exact dates have not been determined, we anticipate that the first stage will start in approximately 2014 and that there will be five to six years between the start of each stage. We envisage the following stages:
STAGE 1
A Construction of the large indoor space and associated facilities, including change rooms, weights rooms, classrooms and staff offices.
B Redevelopment of the current gymnasium into a senior learning centre, including lecture theatre, classrooms, staff offices and tutorial rooms.
STAGE 2
A Construction of a multistorey teaching block, including science laboratories, prep rooms, classrooms and staff offices.
B Demolition of Kelly Science Block.
STAGE 3
A Construction of a second multistorey teaching block, including classrooms and staff offices.
B Demolition of A Block and B Block.
C Landscaping to re-establish Centenary Park and Carrigg Court.
STAGE 4
A Construction of a new rowing facility and hall.
B Redevelopment of the current rowing shed into classrooms and other learning spaces.
C Demolition of Gibney Hall and the existing administration block.
D Construction of a performing arts centre, including canteen, greenroom and storage.
E Construction of a new administration block. Most of the buildings will include walkways at all levels for ease of access and weather protection.
As the Junior School project is a relatively small one, it will be considered as funds become available.
