Miss Amanda Marocchi Manager 1st XI Soccer

This year we witnessed the continuous upsurge in the popularity of Soccer with over 200 boys nominating Soccer as their chosen winter sport. The world game seems to be exploding in Australia at the moment with resurgence of the A-League and in particularly some fanatical supporters. Trinity College has a strong history of dominating the soccer in the PSA competition but we are finding that the other schools are now improving their coaching and training standards, resulting in a considerably improved standard.

This year’s 1st XI season was certainly a challenging season but speaking on behalf of the team, it certainly was an enjoyable learning experience for all involved. The team went into the season having lost 8 or 9 of the regular starters from the 2012 Lawe Davies Cup victors. Despite this the boys went into the season somewhat confident and to a minor extent complacent.

This complacency certainly showed throughout the season with inconsistency proving costly and inevitably the difference between 1st and 3rd on the ladder. Beating the likes of Scotch and Christ Church who finished 1st and 2nd showed the skill and class of the team in two outstanding victories. However, losses to the likes of Guildford and Aquinas proved costly. Though these games ruined the team’s chances of tangible success, it was a powerful learning experience. We finished the season off strongly with 2 wins and 2 draws and believe the team began to unite and grow closer together. I have no doubt that the coming years of 1st XI Trinity Soccer will bring success with a team full of young talented players coming through the ranks.

Congratulations must be extended to our younger teams with some outstanding achievements throughout the season. A special mention to the Year 10A which showed a great deal of promise and enthusiasm finishing the second half of the season strongly. The first few matches were shaky but before too long a sense of system was evident in their play and the team produced some impressive efforts highlighted by good support and skillful use of the ball. The Year 9A capped a stellar season with their first victory over their bitter rivals Hale School in five years. The boys were determined and focused on the task set by their coach James Marocchi and the boys delivered, executing the game plan perfectly. There are promising times ahead for these outstanding young men.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of our committed players from Years 7-12, their parents and all the individual coaches on their impressive efforts throughout the year. To all those who assisted on game day and those parents who provided breakfast for at early morning training, your hard work is much appreciated by both staff and students. And lastly, a big thank you to Coach Mr Shaun Murphy (’87) and Mr David Hankin who assist in everything I do. Their passion for the game and enthusiasm never goes unnoticed.

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” Pele

I look forward to seeing you all again in 2014
