Mrs Julia Reid 1st XI Hockey Manager

Trinity College hockey continued to develop in 2013. The Friends of Trinity Hockey established by Leanne Wilson and parents of hockey players in 2012 continued in 2013 and was responsible for some positive events. The season kicked off with a gala day in the April school holidays, where players from all years were invited. Guest coaches from the Kookaburras worked with the players for two hours, followed by a sausage sizzle.

During the second week of the April holidays the 1st XI squad competed in the State Championships at Curtin University. We competed in the A grade competition which was very competitive. The competition over three days was an excellent form of pre-season training and allowed coach, James McPherson (’06), and the squad to get to know each other.

One of the success stories of the 2013 season was the establishment of the Trinity College hockey hoodie. Thank you to John Loney from Friends of Trinity Hockey who organised the design and ordering. The 80 boys who purchased a hoodie were very pleased with them and we intend to order more in 2014. Another success story was the continuation of the Trinity Hockey newsletter. Many thanks to Jan Hay for her hard work with this and to Simon Eyres for his fantastic photos. The newsletter made entertaining reading with articles written by some of the players and it was great to have action shots of the teams throughout the season. The 1st XI was very competitive and improved throughout the season. Most of the games were extremely close with only a one or two goal difference at the end of each game. The team won one game and had two draws. These statistics don’t give a true indication of closeness of the teams in the PSA 1st XI competition. The highlight of the season was a 6–0 win against third placegetters, Hale School. Fraser Hay (12.2), scored six goals in this game and showed why he was voted the Fairest and Best 1st XI player in 2013. Runner up for this award was Marcus Di Filippo (10.3). Congratulations to Marcus on his selection in the WA Under 15 Men’s Hockey team which won silver in the October school holidays.

I would like to farewell the Year 12s who played in the 1st XI this year, Stuart Zekulich (12.1) (c), Fraser Hay (12.2) (vc), Andrew Eyres (12.5) (vc), Jonathon Stapleton (12.1), Charlie Nicolay (12.4), Fraser Staltari (12.2), Aaron Van den Broek (12.4) and Thomas Driscoll (12.4). Their leadership and support of the younger players was outstanding throughout the year and they will be sorely missed.

Fraser Hay in action

The 2nd XI had an enjoyable season and were undefeated for the season, thanks to the coaching of Mr Alastair Hay and the Duckworth Lewis scoring system. Joseph Caspersz-Loney (12.4) captained the 2ndXI and did a wonderful job leading this team. Even though the true final scores were not often in their favour, the 2nd XI trained hard, improved their hockey and grew to become a very tight-knit group. The enthusiasm and positivity of the Trinity hockey players is a credit to them.

The Year 10s had a season of mixed results under their coach, Mr Peter Norman. Numbers were tight in this group with several Year 10s in the 1st XI; however, there were some good results and a great team spirit was displayed. Thanks must go to some of the Year 9 players who helped make up numbers at times.

In the Middle School, Trinity fielded a Year 7 team, a Year 8 team, a Year 9A team, a Year 9B team and a Junior School team. Congratulations to the following players who won awards for their teams.

The Year 7 team was coached by Ms Elise Kukulka and Joseph Clear. Harrison Pell (7.3) won Fairest and Best and Benedict Coates (7.7) won the Coaches Award.

The Year 8 team was coached by Helen Andrich. James Caspersz-Loney (8.7) won Fairest and Best, Liam Buckley (8.7) won the Coaches Award and Nicholas Thorne (8.4) won Most Improved.

The Year 9A team was coached by Glenn Christiansen. Thiru (Ram) Elford (9.1) won Fairest and Best, Rohan James (9.7) won the Coaches Award and Zeke Okley (9.7) was Most Improved.

The Year 9B team was coached by Mr Michael SlackSmith. Fairest and Best was won by Zeke Okley (9.7), the Coaches Award was won by Florian Robbins (9.5) and Harrison Lockley (8.3) was Most Improved.

Mr Peter Norman coached the Year 10 hockey team. Fairest and Best was awarded to Mitchell Askey (10.5), Coaches Award was given to Joel Bendotti (10.2) and Ryan Gonsalves (10.2) was awarded Most Improved.

Mr Alastair Hay coached the 2nd XI and Joseph Caspersz-Loney (12.4) won the Fairest and Best award. David Colton (12.7) won the Coaches Award and David Hayes (12.5) won Most Improved. Mr James McPherson (’06) coached the 1st XI for the third year. Fraser Hay (12.2) was voted as Fairest and Best. Goalkeeper Thomas Driscoll (12.4) was given the coach’s award and Lachlan Broun (10.7) was awarded Most Improved.

I take this opportunity to thank all the hockey coaches this year. The contribution of these staff members to hockey at Trinity is greatly appreciated I would also like to thank the Friends of Trinity Hockey for their support this year in my first year as manager of the First XI. The sausage sizzle cooked after Thursday trainings each week by Simon Eyres was very much appreciated by the boys. The fundraising done by the committee meant we were able to give trophies at the hockey dinner and have some funds available for future projects.

2014 promises to be an exciting year at Trinity Hockey as we start making the transition from grass hockey to turf hockey. Each team from Year 7 to First XI will train on turf at Perth Hockey Stadium for one session per week and many of the home games in all age groups will be played on turf at the stadium. I’m looking forward to it!
