Celebrating 40 Years of PSA

4. Head of the River 2008

t was in 1963 that Br Tony Kelly, the first Principal of Trinity College, pursued his idea of seeking to join the Public Schools Association (PSA). A prerequisite of joining the PSA was that the College should have suitable playing fields. Due to Br Kelly’s perseverance in 1965, just as he was finishing his time as Principal, the Provincial Council granted Trinity College 44 acres of Clontarf land for a sports field. On 4 May 1967 a formal invitation to join the PSA effective from the beginning of Term 3 1968 was made by the President of the PSA in a letter to Br Carrigg, the new Principal of Trinity College.

Sam Collins Captain of Boats holds the Hamer Cup high in victory. A fitting reward for the high level of rowing shown by the Trinity team in 2008.

On Sunday, 12 April 1970 Mrs Hazel Megaw officially opened the new Waterford Pavilion named after her husband in recognition of the magnificent contribution that he had made to the sport fields project.

In March this year a Morning Tea was held at the Waterford Playing Fields to commemorate Trinity’s 40 Year participation in the PSA. Guests included Br Tony Kelly, Br John Carrigg and Mr Tim Megaw who were all responsible for the acquisition and preparation of the Playing Fields. To commemorate this milestone the 2008 Annual contains many archival sports photographs, a glimpse into past events that form the very foundation of the fine College we see today. 5. 1st XI Hockey 1993 With the success of the 1987 team as a foundation, Trinity hockey teams, coached by Peter Robinson, won six premierships in seven years. Many players from these teams went on to play in the local first division competition and for Western Australia. In 1993 Trinity dominated the PSA Hockey with a 9 win 1 loss record to cement their place as one of the finest teams to be fielded by the College. Back Row: A Kozyrski, D Payne, J Jennings, P Dornan Second Row: J Sosnowski, J Hurst, M Robbins, S Theobold, S Kent Front Row: D Patterson, M Dalby (Captain), Mr P Robertson (Coach), J Pearce (Vice Captain), S Messer

7. First Trinity PSA Interschool Athletics Team 1968 1968 was a landmark year for Trinity College sport as the year of entry into the PSA. As the Trinity colours flew for the first time at the Interschool Athletics Carnival with six other very distinguished schools, our team displayed the pride, the seventy-four year traditions and the sportsmanship of Trinity College. 2. 1st XV Rugby 1991 Of all the success stories in Trinity’s sporting history none is as striking as that of Rugby – rising like a phoenix from the ashes of twenty years of defeats. In 1987 rugby at Trinity had reached its nadir when the College was granted special dispensation from the PSA Headmasters not to field a 1st XV team – the first time in Trinity’s history that this had happened. However, Trinity’s performance in 1st XV Rugby was to improve greatly over the next few years, culminating in a stellar year in 1991. In this year, with Ken Sass as the new coach and Aaron Hunt as Captain, the Trinity rugby team went through its season undefeated. Under the inspirational coaching of Sass, rugby at Trinity then became a powerful force. Back Row: J Spradbury, J Brinkley, J Butson, C Ratajczak, A Hook Second Row: T Burvill, S Carter, M Dudarz, A Cacho, S Dejong, D Whitney Front Row: E Castillo, A Hunt (Capt.), Mr K Sass (Coach), A Arthy (V Capt.), P Price

8. Football 1974 1st XVIII Br Basil Hickey coached a 1st XVIII Australian Rules Football Team to a memorable tied Alcock Cup win in 1974 with Christ Church Grammar School. Br Hickey is thought to be the only Headmaster of a PSA school to have coached a winning team at that level. The team was captained by Barry Kimberley with Vice Captain David Steinepreis and included Craig Holden, Maurice Embley (father of current West Coast Eagles player and Trinity Old Boy Andrew Embley) and John Montagu who subsequently became a teacher at Trinity and has coached Trinity 1st XVIII to many Alcock Cup victories.
