Rowing
Trinity Rowing has had an amazing year, a celebration of the rowing community on and off the water, including the donation of an eight, The M.P. Harries and two quads, the Trinity Spirit and the Old Boys, the construction of a trailer, the seamless provision
Mr Phillip Jurjevich Director of Rowing of towing, breakfasts, newsletters, fundraising triathlons, the Rowathon and countless challenges offered and met by our brave rowers. The rowers in the boats knew they had their families’ support and love and rowed with pride: seven wins in the Head of the River Regatta, retaining the Hamer Cup, a brave all out attack on a great Christ Church 1st VIII by our boys and a succession of regattas with between seven and twelve wins. Old Boys Christian Eyres (‘07), Rhys Grant (‘07) and Ben Cureton (‘04) all represented Australia at the highest level with Ben competing at his second Olympics. Year 12 student Sam Collins broke the schools 2000m ergo record in a time of 6.16, with Nick McKenna breaking the Year 10 record in 6.43 and Mitch Boros the Year 9 record in 5.09 for 1500m. On our second tour of Tasmania we made some new friends and had some enjoyable races. We also enjoyed tours of Cradle Mountain, Mt Roland and went for long rows on the beautiful Lake Barrington in the company of our Christian Brothers’ brother school in Hobart, St Virgils. This was organised through the assistance of Trinity Old Boy Damian Messer (‘84), the son of Jack Messer after whom the boat shed is named for his founding work and guidance. The generosity of the community continued with many parents travelling to Tasmania to cater for our boys and the St Virgils boys. Mrs Harries, Mrs Ambrogio, Mr Boksich, Mr Robinson and Mr Murphy worked tirelessly and ensured a seamless tour. Joe Tamigi, Gavin Russell, Colin Webster and Mark James took the boys through rigorous training on the water and up and down the 4km hill that led to the hydro lake.

The efforts of the boys were marshalled by our Captain of Boats Sam Collins, Vice Captains Josh Hicks and Ben Melville, also Captain of Coxswain Michael O’Neill. Josh Hicks retained the Xouris Cup for Open Sculling and the 1st VIII fought well but narrowly missed out on retaining the Kosovich Cup. However Trinity won every regatta, the Hamer Cup and the Wesley indoor ergo competition with Sam Collins taking out the Open category.
We were blessed with the support of the College and the parents, with the Sunday Times writing an article about the work of our parent group on the naming of the M.P. Harries after our long serving Kitchen Coordinator Marilyn Harries. This was an honour to Mrs Harries and to all parents, Mr Dave Tomasi and all members of the Auxiliary; the devotion and generosity from the Auxiliary is one of our secret weapons, thank you from the College and the rowers!
We also have the greatest group of coaches with Mark James coordinating our program and coaching, Gavin, Claire, Colin, Paul, Robert J, Joe, Jerram, Liam, Rob T, Ricardo, Kris, Blake, Justin, Doug, Mike, Monty, Roland, Paige, Jay, Ben, Adam, and James. This group includes State, PSA, National and World Champion coaches and rowers competing and striving at these levels.
The dedication of the parents and the past rowers is a message to our leaving rowers that the future of Trinity rowing is yours and once you have pulled on a handle in our singlet, you are a crew member for life. The future of the club is in your hands as to how the boat runs. Ease the oar on a great season! Row on 09!

Trinity Rowing Club – New Trailer
With a move to Champion Lakes at Kelmscott likely in 2009 for all PSA Rowing Regattas the Trinity Rowing Club was faced with the issue of towing all boats by road to future rowing regattas. For many years the Trinity Rowing Club has elected to move all boats to the local regattas via the water with the aid of towing boats and the help of up to sixteen willing parents each weekend. The new purpose built course at Champion Lakes is not connected by any waterways, making the previous method of towing redundant and the need to acquire a suitable road trailer necessary.
January 2008 saw the beginning of what was to become one of the largest, most successful and rewarding projects undertaken by the Trinity Rowing Club. A number of unexpected generous financial contributions to the Trinity Rowing Club throughout 2007 and 2008 allowed room within the annual budget to embark on this new capital project.
Approval was given to proceed immediately. Each Sunday for a period of eight weeks a large group of enthusiastic parents congregated at Rob Murphy’s factory in Malaga to bring the trailer to reality. Many who witnessed the endeavours of this dedicated group of parents remarked at the passion, skills and pride shown in this project. I was fortunate to be involved for the majority of the project and was continually amazed by the unselfish and friendly manner amongst all who participated and the raw energy of people who were often working with unfamiliar machinery and using skills that even they thought were foreign to them. The combined enthusiasm of all has resulted in the Trinity Rowing Club being the proud new owners of a unique, high quality and functional trailer that will be a valuable asset for many years to come.
Whilst many people assisted in numerous ways donating materials and time, special mention must be made of the unselfish contribution by Rob and Vianna Murphy. Without the use of their factory, specialised machines, staff and their sheer enthusiasm the project in many ways would still be only a dream.
Heaps of laughter and plenty of hard work mixed amongst a lightly skilled Irishman on the mitre saw, a bald man cooking 500 underdone sausages on the BBQ, a visit from one of our friends – resulting in a vehicle theft and a lesson in glue..., the “rubber lady” climbing scaffolding, four deliveries to get one piece of mesh, the icy cold beers ending the day, Sikaflex on hands for days, “Sam the Stuntman” and his Sheet Metal Show, the big orange Falcon, the bent trees, the rivets through the extension arms, Jimmy the Inspector, working in the dark and the heat, ears ringing for days, the farmer from the north,... What a journey... What a result... What a fantastic group of people... The Spirit of Trinity is well and truly alive!
