Boys In Groove

One, two, three … one hundred and fifty Trinity junior boys dancing their hearts out at the BIG auditions! This was a really positive start to the year, and these large numbers emphasised how dance continues to be celebrated in the Junior School. Perhaps the boys had been inspired by past BIG performances or had been tuning in each week to the latest season of So You Think You Can Dance. The quality of dancing had certainly improved, making it extremely difficult to select just 40 boys for the BIG ‘08 ensemble. The first formal performance for the year began with some experimental concepts at the Term 1 Junior Music Assembly. The assembly provided an opportunity for the boys to exhibit some of the dance ideas they had been workshopping during the term. During Term 2 the boys began work on the item to be presented at the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival. The piece, titled Mister Henri Highpants, was a curious study of the challenge and importance of being one’s self. The boys learnt some new breakdance steps and nearly all of the dancers perfected a difficult move called the ‘baby freeze’. The choreography was quite complex and included a combination of dance styles, as well as interesting layering and unison work. The title role was performed by talented Year 7 student,

Tom Lowry. The kooky costumes, designed and sewn by our generous mothers, led by Mrs Carolyn Orr, were as creative as ever! Term 3 saw the boys perform Mister Henri Highpants at the Perth Convention Centre as part of the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival. Their performance was full of excitement and passion, and culminated in an Honourable Mention from the adjudicators. However the biggest thrill was yet to come, with the announcement that BIG had received the Presentation Sisters’ Primary Dance shield and the privileged opportunity to perform Ms Ruth Bott Performing Arts Coordinator at the Festival’s final concert held at the Perth Concert Hall. This was the fifth time BIG has been awarded the shield for most outstanding primary dance. Term 3 also saw the final performance of this BIG item at the annual Outside Edge Contemporary Concert on 15th September. The boys and I were sad to leave this item behind us, knowing that the BIG ‘08 experience was drawing to an end. Working with these 40 energetic, committed dancers was brilliant and I will always remember the boys singing expressively to one of their favourite dance tracks, Express Yourself. An additional element to the dance calendar was the Term 4 dance workshops which gave a further 70 boys the opportunity to develop their dance skills. These sessions, known as the BIG 2 Workshops, saw the boys practise their circus, breakdance and martial arts skill under the instruction of expert coaches. Yes, dance at Trinity College is BIGger and better than ever!
