Administration

Our College community was reminded in 2008 that more often than not the most important lessons taught are sometimes neither planned, nor do they come from a well designed curriculum or effectively sequenced set of well constructed learning experiences within the Martin Tobin classroom. The life-lesson

Head of Senior School delivered by Fr Michael ‘Mac’ McMahon during his final days with us will remain with us for the rest of our lives. His humility, courage and joy in the face of suffering remind us that school and life are more than simply the acquisition of knowledge and competencies, rather, the search for Truth and Wisdom! It is during these difficult times that we are also reminded of how fortunate we are to be a part of the Trinity College community. The generous support provided during this time of great loss by staff, students and families was simply overwhelming.

World Youth Day, Sydney 2008

The opportunity to be a part of the magnificent celebration of life, youth and faith at World Youth Day in Sydney was certainly a highlight of 2008. The twenty-eight students and six staff that travelled as the Trinity College group were privileged to experience the universal nature of our Catholic Faith through our engagement with young people (and not so young) from all over the world. I am sure that we will continue to draw strength from this pilgrimage experience in the coming years.

Academic Performance

I am continually inspired by the enthusiasm that our senior students demonstrate for the wide variety of opportunities that are available at Trinity College. The graduating Class of 2008 are no exception to this trend as they have made a significant and whole-hearted contribution to academic performance, sport, the arts, Campus Ministry, and Liturgical and Sacramental events.

I take this opportunity to congratulate the graduating Class of 2008 on their performance in the Tertiary Entrance Examinations. This year’s results were particularly pleasing and a credit to the hard work and expertise of students and staff.

Senior School Council

I would also like to acknowledge the members of the College’s Senior School Council and teaching staff for their efforts and cooperation throughout the year. The College is most fortunate to have a dedicated team of Heads of Year in the Senior School to assist students with their academic and pastoral needs. Next year Mr Shackleton, Mr Osnain and Mrs Wilson will take on these important roles in Years 10, 11 and 12, respectively. Mr Montagu in the new role as Director of Student Services will provide additional support to students and staff and his extensive experience will be of great benefit to this pastoral care team.

The Council continues to focus on the final phase of implementation of the newly developed WACE Courses which provide a relevant and diverse curriculum to meet our students’ needs next year and in the future. Moreover, the Council continues to work towards ensuring that Trinity College continues to be a leader in boys’ education through its pastoral and curriculum initiatives.

I take this opportunity to thank Mrs Lane and Mr McKenna for their generous contribution to the Senior School. Mrs Lane has served the College for many years as a teacher and as the Head of Year 12, and her presence and example will be greatly missed.

Senior Leadership

This year’s College Prefects led the student body with distinction in all pillars of the College. I take this opportunity to thank all Prefects and the Class of 2008 for their support and I wish them the best of success in their future endeavours.

The process for the nomination and selection of the Prefects for 2009 commenced in Term 3 and the response from the student body was most pleasing. The Prefects were formally presented to the College community at Presentation Night. Congratulations to Head Prefect Adam Taylor and Deputy Head Prefect Michael Houwen for their selection as senior leaders for 2009!

Future Developments

The redevelopment of the Senior School classrooms over the summer holidays will ensure that students and staff are provided with more effective and comfortable learning areas on their return in 2009.

Students will also experience a new school timetable in 2009 that consists of a six period day. As part of the timetables design, Year 10 students will undertake a newly designed personal development and well-being program. This will provide students with the opportunity to undertake a study skills program, further career education, and communication and leadership skills. Students will also participate in the Road Awareness Program and undertake sessions on mental health, resilience and drug education.

Finally, to all students, staff and families I thank you for your cooperation and support throughout 2008, and I wish the graduating Class of 2008 all the very best in their future endeavours.
