Coach 1st XVIII Trinity College had yet another outstanding season in 2008 with four teams winning and most other teams finishing in the top two. Bill Quartermaine’s ‘Smarter Than Smoking’ team won the Years 8 and 9 statewide competition for the fifth time. Bill has secured five out of the last seven titles – an outstanding achievement.

The 1st XVIII team started the year with very high expectations as they were competing for their sixth straight Alcock Cup. We had an interrupted start to the season with a number of our Year 11s being involved in the Western Australian under 16s Carnival and many senior players having Colts commitments.

However we managed to get together for the first game against Christ Church and came away with a 20 goal victory. This good start was consolidated over the next two weeks with comfortable victories against both Wesley and Scotch. We continued this form by taking care of Guildford and then enjoying perhaps our best win for the season against a formidable Hale outfit.

The next two weeks were some of the lowest times experienced by the boys in recent memory.

Aquinas came to play and outplayed us in contested ball as we suffered our first loss of the year by 16 points. This disappointment was compounded by a surprise one goal loss to Christ Church.

The lads bounced back and showed some character and fight, resurrecting our season with a 42 point win over Wesley.

This game was full of emotion as it was dedicated to Father Michael McMahon. Father Mac, who loved his footy immensely, particularly enjoyed supporting his beloved Trinity team. His pre-game speeches will be engrained in the memories of all the boys who had the pleasure of hearing Fr Mac’s voice as they ran on for the big game. He will be sorely missed by the whole Trinity Football Community.

We finished off the year with comprehensive wins over Scotch and Guildford to end the season on a high note. Whilst our 8-2 record sounds impressive, it was not enough to retain the Alcock Cup and Aquinas took it out, finishing the year undefeated.

A special mention must go to Kane Lucas and Mitch Duncan who continued with their previous State representation by competing manfully in the National Under 18s Competition. Both boys were missed throughout the year but are already being touted as draft prospects in the 2009 AFL draft.

In addition, the efforts of Reece Conca, Daniel McDonald, Dylan Murray and Redmond Dobson must be recognised, as they were all key members of the Western Australian Under 16s side that played before the AFL Grand Final, narrowly missing out on victory over Victoria by a mere 7 points.

The 1st XVIII Captain for 2008 was Xavier Foley - to say that he led from the front would be an understatement. The Fairest & Best led the side with terrific courage and skill. His 10 goal 3 point effort against Hale at home was the standout effort of the season. Xavier was ably supported by Vice Captains Travis Colyer, Damon Joyce and Kane Lucas. I must include Sam Collins in this leadership group. Sam also set the bar high for those around to follow.

To the school based coaches, I would like to thank them again for their enthusiasm and genuine interest in seeing the lads improve as young men and footballers. You have won the Hamer Cup and the Smarter Than Smoking Cup however we just missed out on the Alcock Cup this year.

A thank you must go to the Trinity College community for all the support received throughout the year. The President of the Trinity Football Association Rick Sneeuwjagt, Treasurer Ruth Stevenson, Assistant Coaches Bruce Stevenson and Dan Foley, Football Managers Chris Colyer and Chris Winters, also all-rounders Austin and Julie Colquhoun and Nick Di Lello are just a handful of people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to give our boys the opportunities that they received throughout the year.

The challenge now lies in reclaiming the Alcock Cup – a challenge that the next crop of lads already have their eyes set on – and for the junior lads to continue to develop as young footballers and young men.
