Collaborative Mural Painting Project
Among the many and varied art projects implemented this year, art students laboured over a mural painting project based on the College itself; its history, and its ‘pillars’, namely religion, academic achievement, sport and arts. A total of five panels (approx 2.2m x 1.2m) were produced reflecting some of the life of Trinity College, its vibrancy, achievements, tradition and spirit. Artist in Residence Ms Maureen Elphick assisted students with this very demanding and time consuming project. A group of dedicated Year 11 art students began the project in term two spending much of their class time drawing and producing designs reflecting important and meaningful aspects of the College. After the design and development phase, a group of Year 10 and Year 11 art students volunteered their time and spent much of their Term 3 holidays painting the murals. Students continued working on the panels in the weeks that followed until finally we proclaimed the murals finished at the end of Term 4. I would like to thank our assisting artist and our students for their dedication and hard work.
This was a successful project which produced meaningful outcomes for both students and the Trinity College community. It is anticipated the mural paintings will soon be displayed in the College grounds, adding a more vibrant and enriching atmosphere to the school environment. The ‘religious’ panel will be printed on to the cover of the Student Diary next year. The following students assisted with the mural painting project;
Year 11 students: Leo Titley, Adam Taylor Luke Middleton, Joshua Tavener, Nathan Scott, Matthew Pendergast
Year 10 students: Matthew Rechichi, Adrian Petersen, Alessandro Pittorino, Lachlan Ferguson and Oliver Brabazon
Trinity art students continue to be acknowledged for their outstanding achievements in the Visual Arts. Year 12 art students in particular, have had their artwork selected for inclusion in a number of prestigious exhibitions in Western Australia. Perhaps the most significant of these exhibitions is the Year 12 Perspectives Exhibition which showcases the most outstanding artworks produced by Year 12 students State-wide. Congratulations to Year 12 art students (class of 2007) Liam Dee and Edward O’Connell who had their artwork selected for inclusion in this highly prestigious exhibition. Some of our current art students also had their artwork included in the Angelico Art Exhibition for most outstanding artworks produced by students in Catholic Schools. Congratulations to the following students: Alexander Malkovic (Year 12), Luke Middleton (Year 11), Luke D’Annolfo (Year 10), Damian Cook (Year 9) and Earl Harris (Year 9). These individual student achievements serve to reflect the ambitious efforts and talents of our art students.
Our student art exhibition was also a great success this year. This exhibition was held during Presentation Night at the Perth Concert Hall and allowed parents and families to enjoy the superb artwork produced by our students. Our student exhibition is sponsored by Trinity Old Boy Patrick Coward (class of 1981) and seeks to promote excellence in the Visual Arts. This year the Signum Fidei Art Award was judged by artist Ms Maureen Elphick. Congratulations to Year 12 student Alexander Malkovich who was the recipient of this major award for his painting ‘Eye to Eye’. Alexander also won the People’s Choice Art Award. His painting was voted by the public as the favourite artwork exhibited during our art exhibition. The Year 12 Highly Commended prize was awarded to Nathan Rompotis. The Year 11 Highly Commended prize was awarded to Leo Titley. Congratulations to all these students for their grand achievements.
The Year 10 art students also produced a series of drawings which were submitted for judging in our annual Adelphe King Prize for Drawing. This award is sponsored by Adelphe King, a previous art teacher at the College, and aims to encourage the development of drawing skills. Congratulations to Year 10 student John Wong who won this drawing prize for his pastel still life sketch.

The Art Department would like to thank our art students for their enthusiastic efforts this year. Many thanks to our art sponsors, Mr Patrick Coward and Mrs Adelphe King, for their continued support and encouragement of our students in their creative endeavours.
The Light Entertainment Police: Comedy Division, Special Flying Squad
Five Year 12 students took the initiative to select and rehearse a drama piece to perform at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival Ms Ruth Bott this year. These boys, Performing Arts Coordinator Patrick Williams, Patrick Whitelaw, Stefan Pugliese, Daniel Purcell, Julian Sieber, wanted to create a comedy drama act that developed and portrayed their acting interests and abilities. And so Right in Tension was created, an arrangement of three Monty Python sketches, with the boys writing the opening and concluding scenes themselves.
The boys developed strong characterisation and perfected their comic timing. Such was their festival performance at Mazenod College, that the boys not only received an Honourable Mention, but the prestigious Dr Carmen Lawrence Award for most outstanding Secondary Drama and Mime. Congratulations boys for not only being the first Trinity group to be awarded this shield, but for your commitment to delivering a piece with outstanding staging, costumes and acting. The group had the opportunity to perform Right In Tension and represent drama at the contemporary concert, Outside Edge, on September 17th. Those seated at the Presentation Night were treated to one of the scenes from this drama performed by Daniel Purcell and Patrick Whitelaw. The act certainly provided some comic relief, and was warmly celebrated by the Trinity community. Accountancy will never be looked upon the same way.
