Junior Music
2008 has been a busy year for the students at Trinity College Junior School. In Term 1, students in the Year 4-5 Choir, Year 6-7 Choir, Junior Chorale, Junior School Band, Guitar Ensemble, Violin and Cello Ensembles performed at the annual Junior Music Afternoon in March. Preparation for performance is a critical aspect of these ensemble groups and ensures that they develop to an acceptable standard and have the opportunity to develop confidence and experience in performing in front of an audience. In Term 3, the Middle School Music Night was held, which sees boys from the Junior School and Middle School ensembles perform. Girls from PLC and Mercedes also appear in their capacity as members of the various ensembles. Parents can compare performances by Junior and Senior ensembles, and view the variety of musical experiences offered to the boys at Trinity. These groups participated in the Catholic Schools Performing Arts festival in August .The boys travelled to various venues and listened to other choirs and bands and vocalists as well as their own performances. With the annual Speech Night approaching in Term 4, these ensembles prepare for their final performance as a group for 2008. The Senior Choir has also visited the St Catherin McCauley Retirement Centre this year as a community service opportunity. The Junior Chorale has also had responsibility in leading the singing at both hymn singing sessions and College Masses all year, thus providing the boys with many opportunities to share their singing talents with others and contribute to the musical life of the College. Classroom music sessions have been performance based this year with an emphasis on group and solo performance opportunities. All boys participated in solo instrumental performances within their classes, whereby boys performed on a chosen instrument to display their skill level. Group performances have been
Mrs Elizabeth Leith creative using soundscapes as a basis for group music Junior Music Specialist making. Percussion activities using tuned and untuned percussion instruments have been noisy and fun sessions for all classes. Singing is a major component of the Music Program, where the focus is always on producing a pleasant musical tone, maintaining correct pitch and displaying correct beat and rhythm. Theory work is an important component of extending music knowledge and skill and includes the study of beat, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, tone, texture and style with a developmental approach across the grades. The Music Program has also been enriched by incursions and excursions by the Silver Threads Band, Tetrafide Percussion, WASO and James Morrison. These events highlight the presence of music in the lives of the community and hopefully extend the boys’ understanding of music in the real world. As I leave Trinity College, I am confident that music at the Trinity Junior School will continue to flourish and prosper under the excellent guidance of Dr Robert Braham and the encouragement of the Head of the Junior School Mark Hackett. I am glad to have had the opportunity to experience the Trinity spirit!
