Infrastructure and IT Support

This year the main focus for the IT Department has been on an investment in infrastructure and IT support.

To reflect the growing size and sophistication of the College IT investment we have moved to a managed services model of IT support. This gives us access to the highest level of expertise when we need it, as well as supplying us with help desk staff for our day-to-day needs.

Access to this expertise enabled us to completely remodel and rebuild our network server infrastructure. The College now has a modern, robust and secure network that takes advantage of ‘virtualisation’ technology. This technology in turn leverages costs against improved flexibilility, hardware utilisation, storage, energy savings and management costs.

In addition to managed services these are some of the other areas that have received IT funding:

• The purchase of 300 new computers.

• Two new student computer laboratories.

• An upgrade to the wireless network.

• The addition of two more smart-boards in the Junior

School.

• A major upgrade to the College’s database management system.

The National Secondary Schools Computer Fund

The National Secondary School Computer Fund provides for new information technology for secondary schools. The objective of the Fund is to increase the proportion of computers to students in Years 9 to 12 in all schools, to a national target of one computer to two students. Trinity will have enough funding to purchase 170 notebook computers.

In conjunction with this funding, Trinity will be undertaking a trial of a one-to-one student notebook program. The trial will involve groups of students using notebook computers in the classroom and at home to enhance their learning experience. The trial will rotate through a number of year groups and I am hopeful that Curtin University and Edith Cowan University will be involved in aspects of the study. The purpose of the trial is to provide information to the College in order to make informed decisions on the possible benefits of a one-to-one notebook program for students.
